Daylight Saving Time always wrecks our afterschooling

Recommended Posts

My favorite day might be Daylight Saving Time when we start to get an extra hour of sunlight in the evenings. The only problem is instead of coming inside at 5 when it get dark (which means 3 1/2 hours to fit in afterschooling) we now are getting home between 6:30 and 7. So there is around 90 minutes for the kids to shower, wind down, eat dinner, and get ready for bed. A big part of the issue is spring sports, which we all love. One son is doing baseball (two practices & two games a week) and soccer, the other one has track practice three days a week and does soccer. Anyone else find it difficult to afterschool in the spring?

I'm actually thrilled for my kids to have time to play outside.  I would rather do less afterschooling in order to allow more physical activity.

We've actually cut down a lot lately, and I should probably increase it some.  I think they should spend an hour a day, total, on homework and afterschooling, not including independent reading.  For a while the homework was taking up all of that, so I dialed the afterschooling back.  There is also a mental learning side to some of the things they do for scouts and some of the other activities.  So I try to get some academic bang for our buck that way.  It takes some of the pressure off.

My problem with Daylight savings time is that it has skewed up my child's sleep schedule (like jet lag). He is struggling a lot since the clock changed. It is going to take us a couple of weekends to catch him up to the new time. We are doing less of everything including sports because he is sleepy and tired earlier in the evening, but it is too early to go to bed.

Just... yes. Like SKL I'm thrilled for the outdoor time, but we also need to sleep.
