It's an old old old Rom-Com with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel and 4 boys. I have no idea if Amazon Prime has it, but it's highly entertaining and mostly clean with a lot of sweet heartwarming parts.

Edited to add: it is not Prime, but it is definitely worth the $3.99 to rent it. It's a great, not-too-much-thought and entertaining weekend movie.

Be careful with how many olds you tack on there, Sweetie.  The '80s weren't that long ago....

Now I know why my grandparents kept complaining when I referred to b&w movies from the '40s and '50s as "old" (back in the '70s and '80s).

Oldest tried to straight up gaslight me into thinking we needed to do Fallacy Detective twice yesterday bc she likes it so much she wants to do more than one lesson a week. Should I do more, thus finishing the book early and probably necessitating buying more logic curricula midyear?

Booyah!

Do you have to buy more midyear?  Can't you just finish your logic early, and use the time for other stuff?

That seems awfully soon. Here schools didn't start until after Labor Day, so it's only been a month. In NL, they started a little sooner, but they haven't had fall break yet either:

https://www.schoolvakanties-nederland.nl/zomervakantie-2017.html

https://www.schoolvakanties-nederland.nl/herfstvakantie-2017.html

(zomer obviously means summer... herfst = fall, and NL is divided into 3 regions for school breaks, to reduce traffic jams when people leave for vacation... either way, fall break this year is Oct 14-22, or Oct 21-29, and summer break was July 8-Aug 20, July 15-Aug 27, or July 22-Sept 3). So, I guess the last day of summer break here was Sept 4, which would put us pretty much on schedule for fall break Oct 21-29, by Dutch standards. Not that I go by their calendar.

I agree. [pout]

Who was that?

Sam Club.  He joined his mother (Billie Club) on a vacation bus trip with her senior group.  The 90-year-old leader of the group died.  Turns out he was poisoned with lace dipped in arsenic.

Well, she’s already doing WWS plus an essay question a week in something. I feel like we’re at an ok amount of writing. I suppose I could let her finish by Christmas and then see if she really likes logic itself enough to start another book or if she was just wanting the attention. It’s definitely a struggle to give her all the conversation she wants without losing my mind. I had a nice looking plan for giving thm each an hour of one on one attention, but I can’t seem to make it work since it hinged on ds being more independent than last year and dd9 not taking forever to finish her assignments, which turned out to be unrealistic. School kind of feels like four or five hours of four people talking to me all at once so I’m getting very peopled out. And if anyone says, “just teach them not to interrupt†I will scream. You won’t hear it through the internet, but I will be doing it. 😜

Good Morning!!!!

COFFEE!!!☕ï¸â˜•ï¸â˜•ï¸â˜•ï¸â˜•ï¸

Saturday!!ðŸ‘ðŸ‘ðŸ‘ðŸ‘

Slept in!!!!!!!

Had several horrible and very vivid dreams. One of them was I was standing at the bottom of a cliff and watching this dog (it was a beautiful dog, it looked like a husky, but in my dream I said it was a coyote) and it was just scaling this cliff, it was running up it at full speed. At one point it rested on a narrow pathway that was meandering down this cliff, then it started up it again and it couldn't make it and started tumbling down over the rocks. I can't remember if it died. It was so vivid and bizarre. I wonder what it meant.

:grouphug:  :grouphug:   I hope you have nicer dreams tonight.

I rented Overboard last night, thanks to all the talk. Still funny, even though it was the umpteenth time I've seen it. I'm one who will watch a movie or read a book I like multiple times just because I enjoy them so much.

So will I.  I have even been known (even when a kid) to start re-reading a book I liked as soon as I finished it.

Good stories are always worth multiple visits!

So.  There is a thread on the chat board (I know, I know, but Saturday is my only lazy morning and three cups of coffee sounds REALLY good...) about how much discipline is too much. It's discussing a link to a school in Britain that is, shall we say, well-regulated

DD tutors a little girl (well, she's in 5th grade now) in reading comprehension.  S is a bit (a lot) fidgety.  DD has discovered that when she allows S to sit under the table when they read together that S retains more of what she's reading.  (Mapping content on the white board is good, too.)

So.  The point is:  I'm thinking that my darling child can rule out being a classroom teacher in Britain, no?

(For some reason, the dichotomy gave me the giggles.  I'm thinking maybe 3 cups of coffee is too much. wacko.gif)

The guy who died was Harry Cooper.  His very young English wife, Mini Cooper, was driving the bus for the trip (on the wrong side of the road).  It turns out she was wanted by Scotland Yard, known there as The Weeping Widow.

Was this a show? A movie? Sounds like my kind of thing.

A local melodrama acting troupe puts on four plays a year, two popcorn melodramas and two murder mysteries.  It's in a restaurant (replica of an old train depot) that sits right next to the railroad tracks.  Whenever a train comes by they hold up a sign that says "train", and cast and audience all call out "trai-ai-ai-ai-ain!" and drum their feet on the floor.  When the train passes the play resumes.

This time they recruited two audience members during the main play, to be the medical examiner (whose only line was "Absolutely!") and the Scotland Yard detective (her line was "Precisely!").  They also drafted four audience members during the intermission to perform a mini play and the rest of us voted for who we thought did the best job acting.  The one who blurted out, "I'm a public school teacher!  Have pity on me!" got the vote.

The troupe has a lot of fun and thrives off of audience participation.  There are regulars who are ALWAYS there, and lots of others who try to see the show at least once for each play.  We are part of the latter.

I forgot my earplugs, though (it gets a bit loud in there when the play isn't on), and a stadium seat cushion might be a nice touch, too.  The chairs are a little hard to sit on for that long, and there's not a lot of leg space near the stage.

I'd say your DD is a clever and resourceful tutor!

It could be the more sheltered area under the table itself is helping, or it could be that that area cuts down on external distractions.  (Or both.)  Either way, that was a clever thing for your DD to figure out.

I don't think all schools in Britain are like that. That said, while that's workable as a 1-1 tutor, I'm not convinced it would work in a classroom environment.

Another 15 minutes and I'll have had at least a 16-hour fast overnight.  We ate right before the play, and made sure to have our food done and dishes cleared before the play started.  I finished eating about 7:30 and hadn't had anything other than water since then, so if I hold on just a tad longer I'll have a nice, lengthy fast.  My stomach is starting to grumble just a little bit only now.

Hmm, I could start steaming myself some eggs.  By the time they are ready the time should have passed.

One of my eggs was so old the membrane inside degraded to the point that egg white leached through the shell while the egg was cooking.  I tossed that one, but I peeled the others from that batch and am now eating them (there are only 3).

I think I need to do more things this week that eat up older eggs.  An egg & bacon supper wouldn't be that bad.  Pancakes for supper would also go over well.

Dh and I had a long talk about dd's continuing health issues.  He wants to come to the ped. cardiologist on Tuesday.

Also - I put dd's skin symptoms in the WebMD symptom tracker - hives that go to blisters that weep and bleed and then turn to scabs that then leave white patches (loss of pigmentation) on her skin.  It came up with anthrax.  Hmmm.  I'm confident that she doesn't have anthrax.  (We initially thought that it was a celiac rash but this has started happening after going strictly gluten free.  Plus it doesn't look like any of the pictures online of a celiac rash.  )

Jean, she's seen an immunologist, hasn't she?  Of course, that might be because I am now convinced that everything is autoimmune.  :001_rolleyes:

Hugs and prayer for all of you.  What a nightmare.

Which is also a perfectly valid approach, imo. But, if a kid loves a subject, I'd try to find ways to let the kid do more. Your library or ILL might be good resources too - not everything has to be purchased. I'm thinking books with words like 'brainteasers' and 'puzzles' in the title might be things to search your catalog for (or, if you look at Amazon, you can click on "customers also bought", or "customers also looked at").

Wait - a kid might love a subject?! :D

You're right - that's an important factor and worth extra effort to find more materials if needed!

Thanks.  All.

Wait.  It looks like I screwed up multi-quote and didn't get Slache and Susan too.  Thanks to you too.

Yes, I'm glad that he can come to the appointment.  At least I hope that he can come.  He has to clear it with work first.

JJM - an immunologist might be a next step.  We started with cardiology two years ago because all her symptoms seemed to be cardiac in nature.  Then we got the surprise diagnosis (a surprise to the doctor's as well) of celiac.  So we've gone to the celiac specialist and now back to cardiology.

After my dream about the mastiff attacking me, I had a big dog up in my face today. Thankfully, he was mostly interested in licking me to death. :001_smile:

My cough is much better. We are going to try to go boating again tomorrow. I actually felt up to cooking something today. I don't know that I'll be up to making pie, but the afternoon is young, and I've got maple syrup and pecans...

AMJ - one particularly nice thing about that harbor bell wind chime is that if you feel it is too loud, you can cut the "cuff" off the top of a sock and put it on the ding-a-linger inside and it dampens the sound nicely. Or put more than one layer on it and stop the sound entirely.

Have any of you heard about something auto-immune that can inflame hair follicles and cause loss of hair?  Someone I'm acquainted with IRL (a real sweet gal) has contracted such a problem.

Thank you for reminding me to watch my favorite October movie. (Sigh) I just love Cary Grant.

The Cary Grant rendition of Arsenic and Old Lace is a real winner.  I have always enjoyed CG as an actor, too, and he does a wonderful job in this movie, but I can't help but feel he is regularly upstaged by those sweet old aunts of his.

Which also has Peter Lorre starring, which reminds me that I want to watch Casablanca again.

"If you give a mom an old movie....."

She will want to watch a binge of them.

The kids will handle the cooking

and bring their mom chocolate and yummy drinks.

Then she will want to be tucked into bed

and given night-night kisses on the forehead.

She will then sleep like a baby

and be a happy and contented mom in the morning.

We plan to paddle in the morning.

I have groceried, and am taking a brief break before starting chili for supper.  I already have the meat thawing for it, or I would go with the crab legs I picked up at the store.  Those are now in the fridge, planned for tomorrow's supper for most of us.  DD16 will eat something else.

Yeah, I would have thought celiac rash, too. I never got to see if my patches of skin turned white afterwards because of...um...placement of said lesions. I did have a few episodes after going GF, but not as many as I had before.

I do get blisters that weep, bleed and itch like mad between my fingers and on my hands, but those are mostly stress related for me.

That sounds miserable, though.

I have put a Marblehead Bell for me and a Pointed Fir of the North bell for MIL into my shopping cart at that website.  I am currently trying to figure out why I can't add some of their sling hangars to my cart.  Santa is asking for some proactive early shopping help this year.

The pigment change is particularly noticeable since Dd is mixed race. She has spots on her arms, back and fingers. The last time it happened might have been triggered by stress.

I've had those itchy, weepy blisters on my hands, too, and entirely due to massive stress.  A doctor I saw about it called it eczema, but I'm not sure if it was.  The ointment he had prescribed back then helped a little, but it took resolving the sources of the stress to make the blisters stop.
