Dh just came running in the house yelling because he was stung by a bee 3 times while mowing the lawn. Must have been a fast bee. He doesn't seem to be having a serious reaction, but is really freaked out! 😬

Ack. The wasp(s?) stung him 5 times, including on the eyelid. What is with them. Now his glasses are lost.

Yellow jackets, perhaps?  They nest on the ground, and are very aggressive.

I now have the second of two batches of stuffed peppers in the oven for our supper here (except for DD16, who still has to eat soft foods).  The first batch I made earlier so DH and DD13 could take it with them when they went over to DH's parent's house.  MIL & FIL are having that for their supper.  FIL likes stuffed peppers, and there was a sale on red peppers of appropriate size and shape earlier this week.  I bought a bunch.

Krissi, I was just talking to Dancer about her lit class this year and thought of you. Your son has an ipad. Can you find versions of the lit he needs to read (free, library, etc) and download it into his ipad? Then the iPad can read it while he follows along (or just listens).

Oooh, that's an interesting idea!

Taking a break to visit y'all!!

I have baked 2 chocolate chess pies (one for church, one for home), put together a meatloaf to freeze, cooked taco meat to freeze, marinated steak, made glaze and put it on salmon, made a gallon of tea, and cooked sausages and potatoes.

I don't think a bee can sting more than once because the stinger is left behind. That's why bees die after they sting.

Yeah, a type of wasp is more likely since they don't lose their stingers. My sympathies. Dh went a week being stung every other day at a job site. It wasn't pleasant.

We still can't find dh's glasses! We have scoured the yard and the house. He has an old pair that will do for now, but we are mystified at their disappearance!

The Mysteriously Disappearing Booyah!

I have three pairs of glasses and can't find a single one! Thus, more sympathies. Edited by Renai

I am stuffed!!! I had chips and salsa, steak, shrimp, and salmon!! Now the dishwasher has been started and we're watching a movie!

I would love to have an iPad and download books for ds10 to listen to!

I've seriously been considering getting John a Kindle Fire for school. I'd get him some headphones and he could listen to Pimsleur or read a few things in bed. You can get one for $35 if you look at the right time but I don't know if they're good or not. I need to talk to someone about it.

Do they work for reading & audio? I also might get a childproof case for my tablet. We only use it for school anyway. I'd rather not buy another thing ya know?

Yes. And yes. If you don't need it, don't buy it. We only have my phone and two Kindle Fires, no ipads or anything. It works for what I need it for. They read books on it, or, the kindle will read the book. If you get a book that has an Audible reading, it has to be done on your account (rather than the child's if you create separate accounts. That's the only downfall - child accounts can't have Audible, only regular kindle books. Kindle books use the kindle voice to read, not the Audible version (if you have it) when under the child account. Gymnast listens to the interactive Audible books (turns pages) under my account.

There are also games I let Gymnast play on it - ABCMouse, Starfall, and other stuff. Dancer likes her books on it, and studies the Bible on it using You Version. Oh, and Gymnast has the Bible for Kids on it through You Version.

Likety and hugs all around! (I'm on the phone so liking is a pain).

Still vacationing. Lake! Beach! A train ride on an old restored track, with a shootout and horses and cowboys and deputy sheriff badges and a robbery and snacks in the dining car! And then the waitress at the inn where we ate lunch afterward "misplacing" my credit card, plus a lot of hassle trying to "find" it, then canceling it only to have her supervisor call a day later saying she found it. Good news is it cancelled before waitress' tip processed.

All mostly good otherwise! Kids all decided to sleep in the shed and dh said yes, and being the kind of mom who doesn't think five kids ages 3-9 should sleep unsupervised all night long in sheds next to lakes and bears , I slept in the shed with them. Which is why I'm up so early (tin roof rain) after escorting people to the potty all night long. :-D

Insert zombies and coffee. Happy Sunday!

Also, poll.

Would you pay to drive/fly your family of 5 littles from Boston to Orlando in July, then pay $3500 ($500 a head) for a four-day cruise?

Um, I wouldn't take a cruise for free, so maybe not the person to reply, but I also would not drive a family of five littles 20+ hours down I-95 for anything except to collect a squillion dollars.

Good marketing. ;)

I remember when they were trying to create buzz before those tablets came out by pre-announcing the name of the device.  Pictures were circulating on the web of all sorts of pads, with the label iPad.

In our homeschooling the tablets we bought the kids have not been used as much as anticipated.  I've had some books through Kindle or Kobo that I've had the kids read on the tablet, and we have done some logic and math games in the past.  For web searching (for resources) they prefer the computer, however, and for notes they use either notebooks/loose leaf or small whiteboards (used like slates).  In hindsight I could have gotten by by having girl read the ebooks off of my old Nook, and having the other read off of my tablet.

Slashie, I concur--start John out on your tablet, and put off buying more expensive electronic devices until you find you actually need them.  By putting off future purchases you also allow yourself the chance to have a better device later, perhaps for less money.

I'm glad you are having fun, and I'm glad you took the actions you did about your credit card.  Did the supervisor explain what had happened to it, why they couldn't find it before?

I've slept in a house with a new metal roof and discovered just how deafening rain can be when there isn't adequate sound-proofing under that roof.  I hope everyone sleeps in the usual accommodations tonight so you can get more sleep!

I'm up. Caffeine. Very down today. It's hot, sunny and humid. That's probably most of it.

:grouphug:  :grouphug:

Yeah, that is what has been keeping me (and likely DD16) a bit down, too.  Oppressive heat and humidity keep me indoors.  I do better when I can see the sky.

I'm continuing to endure through tomorrow in hopes we get good viewing for the eclipse (partial here), but then I'm dancing and singing and everything else for a storm to come cool things off and maybe bring some dry air behind it.

Well, it is August. I shouldn't complain. It's not been a horrible August here. Hot yes, but amazingly rainy.

I'm sure I'll feel better with some dark-room editing and some epic music. :D  I found another writing contest I want to try for in October. After editing this fourth draft, I'll probably get down to the business of preparing for the next opportunity. I'm not sure I'm going to be query ready after the fourth draft, but we'll see.

Not with such young children. I would go on all sorts of vacations but I think a cruise would be much more pleasant in 5 years.

I'm just afraid he'll break it. My tablet was like $180 but I can get a Fire for $35.

Good morning. Today is Camp Day! Exciting but as usual I am aware of a lot of things going on in the background. That's what happens when the staff and campers are all made up of people instead of robots.

I'd appreciate prayer from the praying types. General prayers. But then specific ones for me: that I won't get sick. That I will handle the drive down. That I will be able to walk. There is a lot of walking at camp and I am limping badly on my left foot and am having a lot of pain.

This is a valid concern, and if you can get a Kindle for that low price it might very well be worth it to get one for the kids.

On our cruisetour my 4yo nephew did have a lot of fun, but it was quite the trial for him at times.  During the land portion we all had to get up very early to have out luggage outside our room doors, and the timing of some of the excursions definitely didn't leave much fudge time for sudden bathroom or other needs of young participants.

While onboard the Kids' Zone rooms were a godsend.  4yo nephew loved his Kids Zone, and BIL, SIL, and I all appreciated the fact that pagers were issued to the checking-in adult for each young attendee.  For his age group adults who check the kids in and out must be on a list of approved adults supplied at the start of the trip.

For grade school ages (up through age 12) there was another Kids' Zone room, and 10yo nephew, 12yo niece, and DD13 hung out there together a lot.  They had a bunch of really fun games and activities running, and since DD13 was family to niece and nephew and they were all traveling together I was allowed to sign DD13 up for access to this room, too, in addition to the Teen Room.  Parents can choose whether their kids may sign themselves in, sign themselves out, or if an approved adult (from a list supplied at the start of the trip) must do either or both signing (in and out).  They also took kids in this room on trips to various parts of the ship, too (supervised by Kids Zone staff), so the kids weren't always confined to that room.  I gave DD13 permission to sign herself in and out, but her cousins were only given permission to sign themselves in and had to have an approved adult come sign them out.

For the Teen Room the teens generally have the ability to come and go as they please.  There were fun activities, video games to play with each other, other games, and general lounge-y hanging out.  Our teens spent part of our ship time hanging out in there, and part of the time wandering the ship either in small groups (with and without adults).

All three Kids Zone rooms shut down for two hours for lunch and supper and didn't open until after breakfast.  The rooms also had limited availability during port days, when passengers were expected to be out and about on excursions and exploring.

Basically there are things to do for the kids on a cruise, but there are also a lot of challenges, especially traveling between home and the port(s) for the cruise ship.  It can be done, but there are a lot of details to consider carefully.

And passports -- if the cruise even has a chance of touching someplace where the passengers might need passports you WILL need each participant to have one.  Give yourself plenty of lead time in getting these, as it can take several weeks or a couple of months.  Also, it works best to have BOTH parents along when applying for passports for minors.  It can be done by just one parent, but there's more paperwork and hoops to jump through and can take even more time.

Get books. Real books. With paper. But I'm a Luddite.

YESYESYES! I use my paperwhite because it's easier for me to read but the kids only do paperback. John's reading the first Hardy Boys book. But with electronics he can do immersion reading in Greek and Japanese. The tablet will read to him while highlighting the words. Plus he likes to read ahead in his math book which is PDF, and listen to audio resources.

Woohoo!  We are SET for viewing our partial eclipse tomorrow!

DH and I set up the telescope today to try out using it to project an image of the sun.  It worked great!  During our initial attempt some of our friendly local police patrol stopped to ask what we were doing.  We showed them, and they were impressed with the idea.  I told them about my solar glasses fiasco and my subsequent search online for alternative means of viewing, and I mentioned NASA, Sky & Telescope, and Astronomy as websites that had instructions for several methods.  We also asked them to invite any patrolling officers in the area with time to spare to feel free to stop and take a look if they see us out there.  We were set up in our driveway, in plain view.

In further playing with our telescope we determined that we had a bigger image and more comfortable viewing when we used just the angled viewer (holds the eyepiece) to project the image sideways onto a vertical surface (our "screen", a piece of poster board clamped to a 2-wheeled furniture dolly).  We were also able to set up a canopy over the screen for better contrast of the image and some shaded seating around the screen.

When we inserted an actual eyepiece into the viewer we got an even bigger image that was also a little dimmer (nice when the sun is bright).  The image was so big, however, that at our comfortable seating set-up it was too big for our poster board.  We moved our screen closer to the telescope and had it all fit, but we had to keep tracking the sun every minute or so, and we were standing out in the sun, with enough room for only one or two people to look at the same time.

We might play around with putting the eyepiece in and taking it out for portions of the show tomorrow, but I think most of our viewing will be without the eyepiece so more can watch at the same time and we don't have to adjust the telescope to track the sun quite as often.

THIS IS GOING TO BE SO COOL!!!!

Woohoo!  A ready for the fun BOO-YAY!
