displace
I am considering getting DS a basic molecular chemistry set. Any good ones you may recommend? All I remember was mine in college where the bonds were springs and they had wooden atoms. Now there's a lot of options. I'll just be using it to show as a manipulative for DS, not necessarily build complex protein structures. Companies that sell DNA kits too would be a bonus. He likes building toys so maybe he'd use it for playing also. Or any other typical building supplies. I considered using colored marshmallows and toothpicks to explain the concepts but usually food gets eaten too quickly to be educational around here. Erica in OR
I'm a fan of the Molymod sets. I have some miscellaneous pieces here at home that my youngest kids use to just play around. When I taught at the high school level, the school where I was had a class set of them. I like that you can easily show single vs. double bonds and get the appropriate geometry with the way the holes in the atoms are set up. I'm thinking it was something like this set. mckittre
We have lots of Molymod here. Chemistry has been my 6yo's obsession for 6 months. Those sets are great. I think all elementary kids should learn with them -- college is much too late.
zarabellesmom
Another vote for Molymod here. It was the set I used for Organic in college. Fantastic!
Erica in OR
I've been thinking about the DNA kit and found a company online that I'd seen in the exhibit hall at a large science conference. http://www.shop3dmoleculardesigns.com/DNA-Discovery-Kit-p/dna.htm They're pricey, but most DNA kits I've seen are IMO, for only showing that one type of molecule. But, I really liked their magnetic design. Erica in OR
8filltheheart
If you want to get a set that you can use for lots of different activities, you might want to look at Zome. My son loved building with Zome and the different kits are interchangeable (like Legos.) http://www.zometool.com/
EndOfOrdinary
MolyMods are Sheldon Cooper approved. They have a giant MolyMod DNA spiral in the back of their apartment for the first five seasons.
