I am not sure if there is already a thread about this, but I have been so involved in thinking about my rising 8th grader that I think I've dropped the ball a bit here...

Anyway, please point me to another thread if there is one, otherwise, here goes:

Math: Beast Academy 4 (continue) and CWP 4

Writing: Attuneup.com

Science: Either Mr Q's science or Athena's Chemistry or ??

Latin: Henle

History: Human Odyssey Book 1

Project-based school 3 days a week, 9-3 pm.

Sport: Tae Kwon Do

What am i forgetting...probably should go back and see what I did with DS12 in 5th lol.

Will 5th grade BA all be out in time to use them next year? I had considered those but I was worried they wouldn't be out in time. Although I guess we could stay with MM5 and supplement with BA

I'm wondering this as well. I don't think it is going to happen. Isn't 4D due out any day? It'll be at least September before 5A makes an appearance.

Math: Singapore 5 (text / IP / CWP) and BA as it's available. Maybe LoF Fractions / Decimals.

Grammar / Vocab: MCT Voyage? Grammar Revolution?

Writing: W&R 4 & 5? With Killgallon Paragraphs for Middle School? Still figuring this out, as this very week she just blew through what I thought were our goals for next year.

Literature: She reads widely. I'd like to incorporate more planned literature discussions with her, just because she'd thrive on them. Something along the lines of Deconstructing Penguins -- nothing rigid or worksheet-based. Lots of Shakespeare for this kid.

History: Canadian, probably using Canada's Natives Long Ago and Courage & Conquest ... although I really, really want to do Big History. Really.

Science: BFSU / TOPS, studying some basic physics and then earth science/astronomy. The goal here is to learn to read and summarize science texts and to conduct a scientific investigation

Languages: Latin for Children B, French (SYRWTLF with my French-teacher Mom), Spanish (something with my Spanish-teacher Mom)

I'm also toying with having her do some self-directed 4-6 week projects.

I can't believe I have a logic stage kid!

We school year-round and promote grades on June 1st, so fifth grade is right around the corner. We're in the middle of a lot of stuff, though, so we won't be adding much that's new.

Math: Continue with the Jousting Armadillos sequence. I am not really sure how fast we'll move through the books - the first one went pretty quick, but a lot of it was review from MEP 6. If we finish before 5th grade is over, we'll start AoPS Introduction to Algebra.

History: We're in SOTW4. It'll probably take most of the year, because we like to expand - we've spent the last month on the American Civil War, for example.

Science: We are partway through RSO Biology Level 2. I'm going to add in some TOPS units for physical science, for her to work through independently.

Writing: We've been writing across the curriculum and will continue to do so. Adding in Kilgallon Sentence Composing for Middle School and some Unjournaling.

Literature: I set up a shelf of books for assigned reading, and she reads them in whatever order she pleases. We discuss, and sometimes she has a literature-based writing assignment, but that's about it.

Foreign Language: She's been begging to start French. I think we'll use Galore Park.

  • 1 month later...

I am still debating about Science. He's using Mr Q now, but to be honest, I haven't been working with him enough with it. That's going to change in May as I am reducing my hours at work, so I can better assess whether it's a good choice. We may just do more living books and continue with Mr Q--I think we are really missing the living books part of the equation right now, due to time constraints.

US Geography:

50 States from Barefoot Ragamuffin

Eat Your Way Through the USA

eta: Just now ordered Draw Around the World USA 'cause it was 25% off. Looks good!

just the further mapping assignments in Trail Guide to US Geography that include rivers, mountains, and such (we already own it, and the other two books focus on states/capitals)

And here I thought I was being so clever to mash Trail Guide to US Geography and 50 States together! I thought they both had different strengths.

My fifth grader will be using:

-Math -- Singapore

-Writing -- We will try Treasured Conversations and see how it goes. I don't want to throw him into WWS1 yet. If TC is a bust, maybe one of the CAP books. . .

-Spelling -- continue with Spelling Power

-History -- finish up History Odyssey Modern Level 1 and do HO Ancients Level 2, with Kingfisher and k12 Human Odyssey

-Literature -- books suggested for History Odyssey plus whatever else I decide he needs to read. Some writing to describe each non-history book. Family readalouds.

-Science -- Mr. Q Physical Science plus maybe some living book supplements. Labs from Mr. Q.

-Foreign Language -- finish GSWL, start Latin's Not So Tough Level 3, continue DuoLingo Italian.

-Geography -- included with history, but also the aforementioned homemade mashup plus Holling books

-Arts -- family picture study, family literature, hymn study with Mr. Pipes, family composer study, poetry, whatever else I throw into the mix. . . These are mostly things I've put together myself. Continuing to play guitar and maybe keyboard.

-Bible -- one of the Explorer studies.

My "baby" will be 5th grade next year!  Wow!  Here's what I'm planning...

History/Geography:  Combination of Mystery of History and History Odyssey HOD style (we used HOD this year and loved it, but couldn't afford two sets for next year as I'm splitting my younger two up so I'm designing my own similar program)

Science:  Apologia Land and Flying Creatures

Writing:  IEW Ancient theme, Copywork and Dictation

Spelling:  AAS (but I may drop this as dictation is working well for spelling for him)

Math:  Math Mammoth 5/6, Life of Fred (finish decimals/percents and likely start pre-algebra... this kid is a math freak!)

Literature/Poetry:  various books and a literature response journal, Robert Frost poet study

Grammar:  IEW Fix It book 2

Distraction 101:  How to look like you're working when you're not... and how to distract others so you are not alone in your "not working".

Bible:  I'm going to teach all the kids the inductive bible study method.  They will each get to choose a book we'll study, then they will have daily quiet times with assigned reading and we'll get together once a week for study together.  Excited for this!

Regular exercise

Piano

I think that's it!
