melted plastic

In my oven. Someone left a plastic handled knife under a cookie sheet in there. When I discovered it, it was quite melted, and dropped onto the bottom rack and the bottom of the oven.

Is this toxic? Is it something that can be cleaned up? Ack!

I wouldn't personally worry about toxicity, but I might run the oven empty for a while, then air it out, in case there are fumes that make your next baked item taste odd. I would do the same after using an oven cleaner, even a non-caustic one as it makes the oven smell odd.

Is it stuck to the base of the oven? If so I'd put the oven on a (very) low heat then try to remove.

When ds was a toddler he melted a plastic bowl in the bread machine... Why was there a plastic bowl in the bread machine? Why was the bread machine where a toddler could switch it on? All good questions! Dh managed to lever the melted blob out eventually (it was melted around the post that the kneading blade fits onto) and I still have it in ds's 'memory box'!

I would air out the house, just to be extra-safe (and also because melted plastic smells horrible!) but I wouldn't worry about any health problems stemming from a one-time thing like this.

If the plastic is stuck to the bottom of the oven, I would air out the oven before cleaning it. Otherwise the odor might make you queasy or give you a headache.

I'd scrape up what I could then turn on the oven, open the windows, and sit outside for an hour or so until you've melted it away.

I melted a plastic bowl in the oven just last week. Sigh. It smells horrendous, doesn't it?

If you haven't already, scrape off what you can. You might even warm your oven slightly to facilitate this, just open windows and use the exhaust fan. If there is still a lot of residue, let the oven cool and then you can unscrew the bottom panel to take it out to clean it. You'll find screws in the back of the oven. If there's not much left, then the oven on high and let it burn off.  If you are DS 15, take that opportunity to make yourself some Bagel Bites.  :ack2:
