Dmmetler
DD10 tends to end up arguing problems to destruction. So, if you have two trains on a track, she's not trying to figure out at what point they'll collide, she's trying to argue that the engineers can't possibly be THAT suicidal, and that surely SOMEONE would try to switch one of the trains off the track, brake heavily, or do SOMETHING instead of continuing at a constant pace. If a problem involves the speed an animal would travel, but it's not within a reasonable range for that animal, she gets stuck at that point, and never makes it to the problem. Does anyone know of a good source for problems that either actually are reasonable real world numbers, or that are totally fantastical so it actually makes sense that these heretofore unknown creatures would act this way? crazyforlatin
Our DDs should be friends because they would both be upset with the engineers and not solve any problems, LOL. I'll take a look at Foerster again, but I think so far I've seen my fair share of two trains colliding on the same track.
raptor_dad
OK. So recast all those problems.... where would you build a siding to allow those trains to pass. Assume the sidings are prohibitively expensive, so you have to build the shortest ones possible. This still requires figuring the intersection/crash point... All those boring vessel filling/draining problems avoid this affective element ;)
FairProspects
OMG, you have my ds at your house in dd form! I can't even express how many times we've had conversations about being teachable and just going with it to practice the math, science concept, etc.
Crimson Wife
Maybe check out Ron Larson's "Math and You" and see if there are any non-science/engineering problems that will work: http://math.andyou.com/
