Biolog Lab Experiments for 3rd grade gifted girls

I am searching for a science curriculum with heavy emphasis on lab experiments for 3rd grade gifted girls. I have a friend who is a microbiology professor with her own research lab. She has offered to work with the girls in her lab every Saturday, as long as I can come up with the curriculum and experiment details.

Any specific suggestions or a general direction I could be looking in? Thank you!!

Look at the AIMS middle school units. I know there is one specific to microbiology. They're well done. AIMS was clearancing their hard copy books and going to e-books only, so you may be able to get them at a discount still.

What does AIMS stand for?  My google-fu is failing me.

Activities integrating Mathematics and Science. www.aimsedu.org

They're very classroom oriented, so are hard to do in a homeschool setting, but they're great if you have groups, and I know they have a middle school level microbiology unit, because I have it around here...somewhere.

Looking on their website, they stopped selling physical books in January, and it doesn't look like they have the grade 6-9 Magnificient Microworld Adventures book in e-book form yet, but it's available on Amazon, in both the 2009 and 1996 editions. I have the 2009, and it's a nice introduction to microbio lab techniques and lab reporting, very accessible to 3rd graders who have good reading skills, but not too writing heavy and "cute" enough to not be intimidating either.  I'm guessing that once the microbio professor starts working with the kids, she'll discover that she really doesn't need to do much differently than she does for her college students, but usually it takes experiencing it to believe it.
