Looking for morning basket suggestions. This is what we've liked so far...

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping to have more morning basket time next year when the baby's a little older. Well, who am I kidding? He'll be a toddler.   But let's pretend we're going to have more time for morning basket next year!

Some books we've enjoyed are...

The Brambly Hedge book

James Herriot's Treasury

Berenstain Bear's Big Book of Science and Nature

Make Way for McClosky

I'm looking for another book with many stories in it. Ideally something we can use as nature study, or something with old world charm. Any ideas?

You may want to check out Thornton Burgess' numerous books. We've only done The Bird Book, but he has so many including one about the seashore and animals. We had The Year Round by Hylander and The Book of Virtues in our basket this year. What about A Beatrix Potter Treasury or The Milly Molly Mandy Storybook? Plug the term 'treasury' into Amazon; I found a wide variety of books that may be what you're looking for.  Farmer BoyHomer Price, Centerburg Tales are a couple of chapter books that come to mind and sort of have the feel you may be looking for.

Happy reading!

Thanks! These are obviously great suggestions because most of them are ones we've read and enjoyed! I did realize we haven't read all the Pooh stories so I've added that to my list. I also found a lovely book called Birds Every Child Should Know.

I was interested in the book The Year Round but can't seem to find an affordable copy, and unfortunately our library system doesn't have it.

Oh! You know what's really nice for nature study are the Among the ... People books by Clara Dillingham Pierson. We've been through Among the Pond People and Among the Meadow People and enjoyed both very much. We're looking forward to starting Among the Night People next.

Yes, my dd loved those!

I also second the recommendation for Thornton Burgess books, The Adventures of Happy Jack, Chatterer the Squirrel, and so on.

A Child's Book of Poetry would be nice, too, if you don't have something similar planned.

I've loved the Usborne Complete Book of Nature. I bought it used a couple of years ago before I had even heard of Usborne! It really is a lovely nature book.

ETA: We've had Paddle to the Sea in our book basket this year. It's a good book with some geography mixed in.

Thanks for reminding me that I think I picked up that Usborne title at a garage sale last year!

Also, we're planning to do the Beautiful Feet Geography guide next year, which uses the Holling books :) So Paddle to the Sea was a great suggestion and is right up our alley.
