Hello everyone.

This is my first post and this is great forum with lots of valuable information. I need some guidance for improving writing skills my son(7th grade in public school). He is very reluctant writer and struggles with writing book assessments(Humanities) with content, his organization/grammar seems to be okay. Sometimes even when he has to write explanation for the math problems/reasoning he struggles(if he does not really have choice he will write, but it is not of high quality and it is slow process for him). He is very good at arithmetic problem solving (or) even explaining the logic orally.

What resources or workshops/classes do you recommend for improving the writing, I think it is problem with putting his thoughts on paper.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Hi dad4two! I'd suggest posting this question on the Logic Stage board.  The Writing Workshop board is really just used for sharing and getting feedback on our kids' writing, and isn't visited nearly as often as the other boards.

My very first suggestion for you would be to download and listen to the middle grades writing lecture by our host, Susan Wise Bauer.  She addresses your question directly, and why it can be hard for a kid to get their thoughts down on paper, and how to address it.  Here is a link to the audio lecture:
