Finishing up CLE 700...now what?

Recommended Posts

Joy is just about to finish up CLE 7 (math) and has done good, solid work throughout.

She wants to do the next level of CLE, but the Hive says it is purely review of what has already been learned. I believe she wants to continue because it is familiar and those big textbooks are downright intimidating. :)

I already own Lial's Pre-Algebra and Introductory Algebra and would just as soon have her use one of them. Since she did so well in CLE 700, which level should we use? We will start slowly and gently, so she can build confidence and a level of comfort with it.

Joy turned 12 in November, if that makes any difference. I don't want to push her, but she needs a nice, steady pace. No major career aspirations as of yet to consider.

Advice, please?

We're almost in the same boat!  We still have quite a bit of 700 to finish, but I've thought much about this as well.  I think 800 seems pretty meaty after just looking at the samples.  So, I've decided to order it and possibly Algebra I as well.  Just to have them in my hands to see for myself.  When I spoke to CLE via email a few weeks ago, they said that it would be years until the other Sunrise editions would be available.  That really discouraged me!  CLE has been the best math fit EVER.  I've read a few threads about upper math progressions, but can't seem to get my brain wrapped around which books would be a good fit for us.

Please let us know what you decided to do!

Thank you for sharing the information about your CLE email. You can tell they aren't motivated by money, because they would have completed all of their Sunrise editions by now if they were! The Hive members alone would make them rich, due solely on its popularity on the boards. :D

It bums so many people out because it does work well and is such a great fit for so many students.

I have been a click away from ordering 800 and Algebra so many times, but waver because I know there needs to be a switch, but when? I have enough textbooks to get us through to graduation, but we just don't want to use them! From reading various opinions here, most CLE users switch after 600, but some hang on as long as possible to savor the CLE goodness as long as possible.

I want to savor the goodness, but I don't know if that will be good for her in the long run. Waaaahhh!

Hasn't some wise, benevolent homeschooling parent figured out the perfect option for we hangers-on?

Would it be possible to rotate between them?  Use Lial's but also have CLE around for extra practice/reinforcement/something to fall back on that she is comfortable with?  And if Lial's isn't working at all, then she still has CLE.

I'd go with something like that OneStep recommends ... but perhaps pull Lial's out for a one-day-a-week trial right now. Do four days of regular CLE work and on the fifth day, start Lial's Pre-A. You'll be able to see how it goes and if your daughter is okay with the format. Depending on how things go, you can:

- get CLE 800 and mesh it with the rest of Lial's (perhaps moving to 3 days/2 days or 2 days/3 days)

- switch entirely to Lial's when done with 700 if she likes it

- get CLE 800 and try Lial's Introductory Algebra if she doesn't care for Pre-A and try that on a 4 day/1 day rotation

- get CLE Algebra I and mesh it with Lial's Pre-A on a 4/1 or 3/2 or 2/3 basis.

I do think it would be good to try Lial's now (not full-on, but just substituting into the schedule) so you know if it is a good fit or not.

Plenty of people switch programs between Algebra & Geometry and then back to something else for Algebra II, so if you stick with CLE through the end of Algebra, isn't the end of the world.

I loved CLE 800 for my son.  I skipped 801 (review/pre-tests) and 810 (which is a booklet on personal finance/budgeting, etc).  Level 800 goes so much deeper than level 700.  It really makes the student think.  Plus, there is  a lot of geometry, real life consumer math mixed in with the pre-algebra.  After we tried 2 algebra curriculums, and my son begged me to go back to CLE.  I switched him back and he loves math again!  I really don't know what I'm going to do for Geometry and Alg II though!

Thanks for the info on 810. I will be looking to shave some time off of 800 (making up time from our move). Skipping 810 (we usually skip the first book too) will work out great.

So, Ewe Mama, what made you decide on Lial's over all the other Algebra books out there?

Angela

It wasn't any great revelation or anything impressive like that. :) I just went with recommendations from the Hive, ranked my top five choices, and started by ordering the cheapest one on my list. At this point, I am looking for something cost effective that will get the job done with a minimum of fuss and muss. All three of my boys do math at the same level, so I will have to have three sets of whatever we choose a few years down the road. Joy gets to be the guinea pig! :D

We transitioned our now 9th grader from CLE 800 to Lial's Algebra this year and by her own admission it's been a smooth transition. I definitely don't think 800 was a review of 700 - far more in depth. Actually, DD1 said she credits CLE for making Algebra seem 'easy' initially. She isn't a math enthusiast, so for her this is high praise! ;) We will likely use 800 again next year for DD2 next year. DS is doing Singapore now and will follow a different math progression but for our girls, CLE has been a fantastic fit.

We went from CLE 700 straight into Saxon Algebra and it has been fine; he is over halfway through the book.  He started it in August--he was 11--and turned 12 in November.

It has been a great fit.  I can't even imagine what was in CLE 800--because aparently CLE 700 was thorough preAlgebra.  I knew I didn't want to use CLE high school, so my intention was to do the Saxon test and make sure he was ready for Algebra 1/2--and he tested 100% on the pretest for Algebra.  Weird.

So don't be surprised if she is ready for Algebra.

BUT I would give her some choice--my son does math easily but doesn't love it; I gave him the option of doing it over 2 years.  But the "status" of doing Algebra won over and he has just moved on.  But when he gets tired doing these 1 hour lessons, I do always sincerely discuss that we can SLOW IT DOWN.  But as long as he is getting 80-100 on the tests and understands it all and wants to keep going, I'm good--

DS2 in in CLE 500 in 5th grade doing solid work--it's going to be a different journey with him :) We will probably do CLE Math 800 and will be VERY HAPPY that it has so much review, lol.
