2nd grade planning thread

I'm just starting to organize my plans for next year. Anyone want to play?

 

Morning time subjects will be Memory Work, Read Aloud, Poetry, Bible, and a weekly study on the Liturgy.

 

Math- MIF 3, Beast 3

 

Language Arts- ELTL 2, Bravewriter free-writes, and Rod and Staff spelling

Latin- SSL2

 

Rotation for the afternoon, I'll either do 2 days of history, 2 days of science, and 1 day of art OR try out doing a dedicated week-long focus on history, science, then art:

 

History- Renaissance up to the American Revolution via All Through the Ages and SOTW 2/3

 

Science- Weekly nature study as well as units on: Weather via the Kids Book of Weather Forecasting, Astronomy via How The Universe Works and Find the Constellations, and Geology via ???.

 

Art Appreciation- finally shelling out for Harmony Fine Arts 2, and hoping I don't regret it :p

 

I also want to fit Shakespeare (Lambs versions) in there somewhere....maybe as a morning read aloud? Maybe as an afternoon subject?

Yes!  I am teaching second grade for the last time next year.  I plan to have a very good time. :)

We have a morning meeting/morning time as a family where I teach Bible, a grammar fact to recite and a Latin chant

Sure - it's kind of early, but at least it will be interesting to see how much of this stuff I still plan to do when 2nd grade starts! :)

 

Math - I'm hoping to be through MM3 by then and starting BA.

Handwriting - no idea.  Probably going through HWT for the 4th time.  I have no hope wrt handwriting.

Spelling - Apples and Pears

History - interest-led historical fiction and related documentaries/nonfiction books

Science - TOPScience and related Bill Nye videos and books, nothing systematic as yet

Reading - no idea.  any ideas for a 6 year old boy reading at a 4th/5th grade level but easily spooked by monsters are welcome.  

Writing - no idea.  We tried WWE, too boring; we tried FLL, too boring; DD9 did MCT, too confusing.  So far we've just been doing practical applications (letters, grocery lists, stories, etc.)  Going to buy TC for DD9 and might try it with DS6 next year but he is so poor at handwriting that it might not be possible yet.

 

Typing!  definitely typing.

 

We have a one day a week homeschool program at a Waldorf charter school planned for next year, so that should be awesome.

Since copywork and grammar excersizes are taken directly from the reading in ELTL I would strongly suggest using the originals. The abridges versions will use different sentences and chapter pacing. If you don't want to have to read them, just use the free audio version on librivox.

He can just listen or read along.

For us, literature is a catch-all for books they read to/with me, books they read for book club,  titles I read to them, and audiobooks.  Other than book club readings, discussion is optional and spontaneous.

 

We do not use guided or phonics readers.

For my second grader:

 

Math: Singapore 3 & CWP 3

Science: Studying anatomy & botany using real books.

History: Studying world history from medieval up to pre-WWI using real books.

Literature (me reading to her): I'm still working on a list. It will be a mix of good children's literature and historical fiction that goes along with history.

Reading (her reading independently): This will be all free reading. I sometimes nudge her toward something I think she will like, but all her reading is independent at this point.

Lang.Arts: Daily writing block, twice-weekly journaling, and some continued spelling work with high-frequency words. She'll also start learning cursive with HWT 3 & 4.

French: Galore Park's Skoldo 2

Art: Artistic Pursuits 2

Extra: Piano lessons, ballet, and seasonal soccer & softball.

Plans are firming up a bit - after I posted this a few weeks ago, we gave Mr Q and AAS another try and he's totally loving both, so I'm now planning on sticking with them for next year. Also, I'm going to wait one more year for MCT or Treasured Conversations and do FLL2 next year.

                     : WWE2 (starting at week 13 as we had covered to there last year) - we will probably start WWE3 later this year.

                     : A language arts curriculum produced locally (to prevent gaps)

                     : Finishing up Grammarland (the vintage one) and then possibly starting KISS

                     : Independent Reading

                     : Dictation Day by Day along with spelling rules and lists where needed

                     :SM Math - starting in 3b and moving at a suitable pace                      

                     : LOF Jelly Beans and again moving at a suitable pace for my child

For our 2nd grade this year, this is what I have planned so far:

-PE will be swim lessons and possibly gymnastics

 

-Homemade penmanship practice and copywork combined incorporating current history or science topic.

 

-We will also do a family time every morning that includes calendar, weather, a daily bible verse, poetry, artist study and memory work.

 

-Oh, and we will likely continue cooking class. Dd's idea but really, it was a good one. I'm always in a rush to get meals on the table on time, it was difficult to have her help. But cooking class is its own time slot and she chooses what we make. I can take the time to explain things to her and help her learn. Its been so successful that its not difficult to let her help anymore so now she also helps with breakfast and lunch most days.

 

-Reading is hardly a subject at this point. She reads early chapter books to herself. She reads passages aloud to me. I read aloud 2 times a day. Dh does a read aloud at bedtime and she reads a passage to him as well.

 

I guess I just need to decide on spelling. And collect all the materials. I have some of the curriculums, Math Mammoth, SOTW, BFSU, Piano Adventures. Most of what I need to collect is all the little things that comprise family time or other supplements we use. Searching a bunch of different websites and hunting for sales drives me batty.

 

I really am looking forward to 2nd grade. I feel a big leap in maturity coming on. She's right on the edge of something and I think once the baby gets here and we are all comfortable with the new family dynamic, dd will really flourish. (that's the hope, anyway)

I'd started planning earlier this week but found out yesterday that I'm expecting baby #5, who, Lord willing, will be born in Oct. I'm having tortured visions of a workbook-heavy year when I really wanted lots of living books.

We just sorta started a new "school year" in January.  My 7 year-old is an auditory learner and seems to do really well loosely following a WTM/CM-ish approach.  So far, she says she likes her new school stuff.  Here's what started:

 

Monday/Wednesday/Friday

 

Reading: She reads aloud to me from easy readers we pick out at the library.  I read aloud to her from books on our booklist.

Language Arts: First Language Lessons, All About Spelling, Handwriting without Tears cursive, her writing is coming from dictation from AAS...and she's been writing stuff on her own (letters, cards, little books, etc)

Math: Singapore and Miquon

 

Tuesday/Thursday (she does all of this with her older sister - the 10 year-old)

We school year round but since I'm due in July, I think we'll shift to a more traditional schedule, finishing the year in May, and not really doing anything formal outside of reading and math until September. I really want to try planning all the weeks in advance just so I have something to fall back on when baby arrives. Everything is fairly open and go, but I want it right down to books I need to check out and what weeks to request them, supplies for projects etc.

 

 

We are going to be a Wayfarers family! Starting in Sept with Medieval Term 1. Solves my planning dilemma above :)

I am not a confident science teacher AT ALL but I bought some Young Scientist kits that are helping me do better. Maybe next year I will feel comfy enough to do a dissection lab (shudder). I'm on the fence about Prima Latina in place of Wordly Wise but I'm confident about everything else.

Sometimes it doesn't, and you just need to keep at it. ;-) We are continuing several things we started last year. Also attempting some again, as they didn't fly last year.

2nd grade, can't believe it.  1st is going by too quickly.  I am not exactly sure where my Dd7 will be by fall, there are a couple areas like reading where I plan on working through the summer.  Here is my plan so far....

 

Math: Singapore Math 2a/2b, and Miquon

Reading/Phonics: AAR

Spelling: AAS 1/2  (we are just barely starting level 1 right now, I wanted to wait till she finished level 1 of AAR)

Grammar: FLL probably level 1 maybe 2 not sure (I delayed this due to attention span)

Writing/Handwriting: Practice sheets made with Startwrite, and WWE 1  (also didn't work for 1st, but this is one I don't mind waiting to start till 2nd)

History: SL Core A (with Dd5)

Science: Probably SL Science A

When 2nd grade begins, I'll have a 4 year-old and a 2 year-old. I expect this to be my hardest year (at least until they are all in upper grades), but the last few months with my 3.5 year old and 1.5 year old have nearly broken me, so I hope it doesn't get much worse! :-)

 

Math: Singapore 3B, 4A, and 4B, Miquon Purple and Yellow, and Beast Academy 3. This boy lives and breathes math.

Reading: OPGTR and Explode the Code 6-8

Spelling: I don't know if I will start this in 2nd, but if I do, we'll try Spelling Power

Grammar: Easy Grammar (unless one of those vintage texts calls my name)

Handwriting: Getty-Dubay, probably repeating book 2, then book 3

Writing: Writing Strands 2

Literature/History/Science/Geography: AO Year 2, secularized. Science experiments on the weekends.

Spanish: Maybe Power Glide, maybe Rosetta Stone. My "make my own" method didn't work this year because I didn't do it.

I want to start Latin, but I don't have any idea how or with what. Also, it might be crazy to even try next year.

Bible: Catherine Vos Story Bible, scripture memory, catechism

LA: WWE 2, FLL 2, MP and VP lit lists, New American Cursive

Math: Saxon 3

History: SOTW 1, re-organizing for a more unit study approach

Science: DIY for free at the library

Beginning piano, art classes at local museum, and hopefully martial arts

Science- WTM suggestions for astronomy and earth science, Nature Study

Art- Artistic Pursuits

 

 

We'll be starting morning basket time with memory work, artist and composer study, and Bible. I'm still working out what this will look like.

We have WWE sitting on a shelf & I'll probably get that out at some point. 

 

I have no idea what to do about History & Science. We sort of did SOTW Ancients this year (sort of). I don't know if I was the problem or if it was the curriculum. I really have zero interest in the Middle Ages :leaving: so I was considering doing Early American History but then I'm starting from scratch as far as researching curriculum. I'm itching to try Science in the Beginning, but I'd like to wait until the whole crew is a bit older. Maybe I'll do some sort of kit....

It's all really a continuation of what were already doing. I just added WWE and FLL this month as I dropped everything but reading and math in the fall. Now DD is telling me she's tired in the afternoons and needs to start taking naps again lol.

 

And just two nights ago, out of the blue, she read a chapter from Frog and Toad. First thing she's ever read voluntarily outside her readers. It's what I've been waiting on for a year! She's coming up on 7.5.

We don't just swap stuff out on a certain date. We move to the next thing when we are finished, so I always keep the next level on the bookshelves.
