Dr. Wile's review of 3rd ed. of Exploring Creation with Chemistry

Recommended Posts

I saw this come across my FB feed this morning and thought it would be of interest.

ETA: ack I forgot the link. http://blog.drwile.com/?p=13271

My disclaimer. I really don't know what happened b/w Dr. Wile ( who wrote the Exploring Creation series) and Apologia. This could be a case of sour grapes for Apologia rewriting his books. However, he has positive things to say of the 3rd edition of the Anatomy book.

His review is highly detailed giving specifics on his issues with the new edition. His reasoning is logical and consistent. Enough so, that even though my eldest is in 1st grade, I'm picking up a used copy of the 2nd edition.

Wow - you would hope that in 8 years they would correct the problem?  My oldest will use it next year.  I just bought the 2nd edition on Amazon.  I also emailed Apologia with my concerns and also to warn them that they may have a public relations issue with this edition.

if anyone is using 3rd edition this year, I'd recommend they at least print the part of the review that Wile did as corrections to text and solutions. (the stuff he called typos).  Or read the other pages and say "oh.. that's why we didn't know how to do that... it isn't taught until 3 pages later".   stuff like that.   that's nice that he listed the corrections to calculation errors and typos.   all publishers make that kind of mistake. good to have corrections list.

gosh I hope they don't break into a cyber fight over this stuff...hmm...

I think in 8 years or so, it'll be all new stuff anyway.  Wile could write a whole new book.  apologia could fix the errors and revise.

(I've used 2nd edition twice and we like it... ooh.. I have a collector's item. giggle)

ps. edit to add:  apparently Wile sent his corrections to the publisher a month ago. so they are aware of this "pr" issue and knew it a month before we did.

  • 1 month later...

I bought the 3rd edition since my child's co op is planning on using it.  I am not a science guru and just looking at Chemistry 2nd or 3rd just makes me cringe.  We will muddle through it and make it work for us. I bought it four months ago so I cannot go and change things now.

FWIW, he sold Apologia because he wanted to focus his attention elsewhere. It was very amicable at the time, although he has expressed in his blog some concerns since about the direction they've taken.

Having gone through the agony of writing and publishing various technical materials as a scientist, I appreciate the difficulty of truly careful proofing and checking. It was very common for about a dozen people to check my work when I was doing that sort of thing professionally.

They seem to have rushed the revision though, and everything he says seems spot on.

I'm not sure that I would buy a science book that far ahead though. A lot can change, and they might come out with a corrected version.
