Is it time for a new "funny" thread?

Recommended Posts

I've only recently returned to the forums after a long absence, but I haven't yet seen a thread for those funny homeschool stories that we can't really share IRL for various reasons. Therefore, I thought I'd start one.

Dd11 struggles with occasional insomnia.  It's not chronic, but it generally freaks her out when she can't sleep.  We have various standard methods of coping with it, including reading a really boring book until she can't stay awake anymore.

Well, last night was a bad one for her and she knocked on our door about 1 1/2 hours after she'd gone to bed, complaining about her difficulty in getting to sleep.  Dh told her to go take another dose of melatonin and then suggested that she try one of her other strategies . . . maybe reading through Erickson's Systematic Theology text as she's done before.  Her response?  "But it's not boring enough anymore!"

Seriously?!?  That text is known for putting grown seminary students to sleep on a regular basis . . .

Dh chuckled and found her a translation of Josephus.  (I, as a history buff, was only slightly offended in the midst of my stifled giggles.)

Who else has one?

Haha! That's great!

We've been doing lots of read-alouds and audiobooks lately, most of which have happened to be British. My 5 year old DD has started to develop British-sounding vocabulary and inflections. For example, she'll say that someone is "cross" or that the "cookies will be done shortly."

We had recently finished Part 1 of Tales of the Odyssey and my DS7 made up this joke:

Odysseus had been sailing for a year by himself. He said, "I have good news and bad news. The good news is: I've been sailing back to Ithaca with no obstacles in my way. The bad news is: ROCK BOULDER!!!!"

The other day, I was doing math with DD5 on our white board which happens to be on the floor because we haven't hung it yet. She ended up sitting in my lap for most of the lesson, and later informed DS7 that she sat in my lap during her math lesson. He gave her a sad look and said, "I'm so jealous!" Perks of homeschooling! :)

This morning my two year old picked up the book on bats my 7 year old has been reading. He sat down next to me, picked up the book and quoted, "Deres a hundweda speechies of bats." Or for those of you who no longer speak 2 year old, "There's a hundred species of bats."

There was a new girl in DD's tumbling class, and the two of them must be kindred spirits. DD came home after class and exclaimed "Today was the best DAY EVER! I made a new friend in class and she's even weirder THAN I AM!" (Yes, she was very excited, that's her personality, and being weird is not a negative in her book.) She proceeds to tell me all the fun they had (and apparently this girl is "weirder" because she hugs people when she meets them. LOL), so I ask DD what her name was. "Um, I don't remember." (DD is notorious for not remembering her "friends'" names until she's known them for months.) "But that's okay, she just called me 'Person' because she couldn't remember mine, either." All I could think to say was "Well, I'm glad you two had fun." Cue the tumbling and flipping all over the living room floor for the next hour.

I've been reading from the book Warriors and Wailers: one hundred ancient Chinese jobs you might have relished or reviled. I was reading about Alchemists--the book says, "Have you ever wished you could turn your broccoli into chocolate?" I paused here and asked dd11, "Have you?" She replied, "No, I've wanted to turn my chocolate into broccoli."

My sons would agree.

This morning my children were discussing the calendar and length of months.  Ds2 said that a month had four weeks.  Ds1 countered that months were not exactly four weeks.  They do not all begin on a Sunday and end on a Saturday.  He went on to explain that months have an upbeat at the beginning and the rest of that week at end just like in music there is an upbeat at the beginning of the piece and the rest of the measure at the end.

I never thought of months in that way before.  It made perfect sense to both my children though.

Hugs people when she meets them? Must be a southern girl at heart.  (From a northern girl with personal space issues.)
