Getting used to my new Fitbit.  Five miles so far today; 12,000 steps.  Walked back from the pub uphill, then took the dog for a brisk walk up a valley.  Fitbit thinks I climbed 56 flights of stairs - I think it gets confused by hills.

 

Yes, it does. Not sure if the newer models are like this, but my older Fitbit credits me with a flight of stairs for every ten feet in elevation. Not on escalators or elevators, though- only when I'm walking.

We are only on week 3 of T25 because we went back a week. I love how I can see definition right away. I just read an article in the NYTimes about how high impact strengthens bones for life. Of course the article mentions how difficult it is for people who are already experiencing bone issues to get this level of impact, but I was so happy because I had started doing workout videos for precisely this reason and I feel like my work is paying off. The other day I bent down over two bikes, on one toe, to pick up a toy--I could not have done that if I had not been working out.

Can I report the end of last week too, since I didn't have a chance on the old thread?  I ended up missing my Thursday workouts due to kid activities I had forgotten about, so I finished the week of my exercise DVD today instead of yesterday and I'm skipping the Sunday rest day for this week.  I finally got out for an outside run yesterday of five miles.  It took me seventy minutes because a. I haven't been running regularly enough, and b. there was quite a bit of ice and snow on some parts of the bike path I run on from thawing and refreezing.  

 

Today we have the biggest snow of the season and a blizzard warning until midnight, so I'll add some snow shoveling to my workout too.  DH has been out there a couple of times with the kids so far, but it's still falling at about an inch per hour and blowing around.

 

Since we can go slightly off-topic on here, I wonder what you ladies think about a thirty-something woman wearing pigtail braids for running.  My hair has been thinning a bit, so I'm trying to avoid wearing tight ponytails, but I hate feeling like my ponytail is falling out if it's too loose.  I tried the braids yesterday, and they were very comfortable and I didn't feel like I was getting a lot of breakage like I do with a ponytail.  I'm short and I look young to begin with, so I'm not sure if it's weird to make myself look younger.  Or does comfort trump looking a little silly while running?

I'm firmly in the camp of wearing your clothes, hair, makeup, etc. to please yourself.   Your braids sound adorable.  Go for it.

I can't run in a pony tail, the movement of the pony tail drives me to distraction.  I also can't get my sparring gear on over a pony tail but my hair has recently grown out past my shoulders.  I'm 47 and almost completely gray and care enough that I asked my daughters of 15, 18, and 20 whether twin braids or french braids looked silly or "too young"-  they approved.  My 20 yo added that if you're fit enough to be out running or sparring you are young enough to wear your hair any way you please, indefinitely. 

 

 

Today was a rest day with stretching and slow kata work.

I will wear pig tails when I'm 60. People can get over it. I'll still be adorable.

 

I always try to look nice, even when I'm working out but comfort definitely trumps style. :)

I forgot to give my PSA. 

 

My little massage ball thingie (like this but different brand) I bought had instructions that said it could be placed in the freezer or the microwave. I put it in the microwave for 40 seconds (it said 30-40 on the box) and on the last second to go it exploded. Yeah. Gooey plastic gel stuff all over the inside of my microwave which seems to be impervious to water I might add. 

 

So, if you buy one do NOT put it in the microwave. Warm it up the other way by putting it in a bowl of hot water.

I've been so sick I haven't had a really good workout in a week. My muscles are shrinking.  :crying:​ 

 

Mommy, you are a superhero. You're muscles are not shrinking after one week. 

 

Sending lots of chicken soup with turmeric and black pepper, you know, for the anti-inflammatory effects.

As a question of functionality I vote wear what you want. Anyone who judges a person who is exercising is not worth a listen. At a job that pays a living wage, I will adhere to social norms. Jogging? No way, the public is going to have to deal.

The study about hopping/jumping seems to say to jump then wait 30 seconds, then jump again.  Is that how you are reading it?  I had been thinking that I could introduce a minute of hopping/jumping after I brush my teeth twice a day, but hop-then-wait would fit less well.  Am I misreading it?

Im on week 5 of P90X3, and it was arm day :). My arms are now jello. I can't do a pull-up, so I do 1-min planks instead to build my core strength. And I can't do more than 1 push up, so I go down slowly on my toes and push up on my knees. That worked pretty well today.

Burpees seem to fit the bill.  I wonder if kicking a bag increases hip bone density or if it's not the right angle?

due to a number of stupid things I am operating on almost no sleep. I will try to nap today...I might not have any choice in the matter, lol. I am often low in the sleep dept. but this might be a record. 3 hours is really not much better than no sleep at all.

 

 

lol, I can hardly type. I keep making mistakes. Oh man, good thing it is a snow day. DS1 is home due to high school being closed, so the chances of my getting ds2 to do any work is pretty low. I might just crawl back to bed at some point

Got in 1.5 hours of singles tennis yesterday (indoors), and some snowshoeing in the freezing cold. Walked 20 minutes in the -21 C freezing cold this morning (in the dark to boot!  :scared: ) I figure that steps taken in -20 C should count triple or something because of all the extra energy burned to try and keep warm. ;)  I can`t wait for spring and summer!

ok, so I shoveled for 40 mins. We have at least a foot of snow and it is 15 degrees with some howling winds. I was having to work overhead (pushing huge piles off the top of the car) and low. And my balance was challenged. I am a sweaty mess so I think that counts for some exercise, lol.  I will have to do it again in about 5 hours.

 

It's the kind of storm where you have to shovel it into a pile and then shovel that pile over a few feet to make room for the rest of it.  And the city doesn't shovel the sidewalks around here.

Ran this morning and did some yoga poses that helped some with my backache/bloating. Superbowl food and my period turned me into a puffer fish. Just call me fugu ;)

Right now I'my in the car warming up at the sledding hill. At least it's sunny.

Yikes! That's a lot of snow! It's been snowing here all day, but I've been hibernating indoors after my morning walk. Someone will have to shovel later, but hopefully the dc can tackle it. ;)

I think they did the study in such a way that people waited, but that is not to say briefer periods would not work.

 

I've just started jumping down the last four stairs in our house...

 

Do you guys jump after every burpee? Sometimes I just do burps like, back, in, up.

I'm off today, which works out well since I have sick little ones. Tomorrow I will head to the gym. I've really started enjoying my workouts and packing more and more into the hour. Right now I'm doing the gym 3 days a week and then we have a family outing in the weekends that includes exercise. I'm thinking I need to do a little more, but right now I'm just celebrating how far I've come, without worrying about how far I still have to go! Thanks for all the support ladies.

How do you sexy beasts measure BMI? I have put on so much weight from lifting that the charts put me in the "severely obese" category.  :glare: I would like to know how much fat I'm still carrying.

 

I suspect that I'm one of the people for whom the charts work pretty well: I'm reasonably active but not highly muscled; not very tall nor very short.

No matter how much I work out I'm skinny. I have definitely moved from underweight solidly into the middle of the BMI spectrum without gaining a single dress size! Woot! Pants size went up but only because of my incredibly sexy butt.

A pretty good day: a half hour walk before work through an arboretum where I spotted Scotland's shy jays; a sprint walk at lunchtime - just over a mile but up a hill and at 13 and a half minutes to the mile; then a moderate walk with the dog this evening - under forty minutes including a hill, but also including hanging around for the dog a bit.  Total 16,000 steps/almost seven miles.

I think you need to go to the doctor to get a good body fat measurement.

 

No matter how much I work out I'm skinny. I have definitely moved from underweight solidly into the middle of the BMI spectrum without gaining a single dress size! Woot! Pants size went up but only because of my incredibly sexy butt.

 

I would love to have a butt. I know that probably sound really stupid, but when I look at motivational workout pictures (pathetic, I know) and see some of those women's behinds I'm jealous.

Here's an article on measuring body composition. It's complicated calculating % body fat. http://www.humankinetics.com/excerpts/excerpts/choose-the-correct-method-for-body-composition-assessment

 

If you have access to quality skin fold calipers and someone who is trained in measuring them correctly, that might be helpful. Otherwise girth measurements of several body parts can work. These would probably be the most motivating if you measure them over a long period of time so you can see your improvement.

While I admire people who never look at any motivational pictures I honestly am not that person. I am of Hispanic descent so I naturally have kind of a bubble butt but now I have to work out to prevent sag.

 

That said P90X3 was my best butt builder so far.

Well, there's the sexy beast rays shooting out all over :LOL:. I just go by clothing size. I am evidently a solid person. My weight and size don't align so I just watch my clothes. Any bid pods on the area for a one time baseline? I have used those measurement calculators to just track loss while I was losing. As for the butt, I come from a long line of board people. I work hard to have any curve back there a'tall.
