Book binding (in small words)

Dd (1st grade) is a little book making machine. She usually just staples several pieces of paper together on the short edge and goes to town, but she has been after me to have a book printed or at least bound properly. I've looked at some kits on Amazon, but let's face it, she's never going to stop at one book and I can't afford to start this sort of thing.

So, in small words, assuming I'm a dummy and need someone to hold my hand, is there maybe a decent video, or at the very least lots of pictures and step-by-step instructions for making your own books using recycled cardboard or inexpensive supplies from a craft store? She's going to want the whole shebang, but maybe we can start small and worry about printed spines and such later? So, nice covers and a stitched edge? I'm a quilter and generally know my way around needle and thread if that helps.

She's not going to go for the three-hold punched paper and brass paper fasteners I would use and her grand plan is to make a whole library. It has been made clear that I'm seriously holding her back. *snort* Please help me! :0)
