Word Jar

Recommended Posts

We read a couple of books a while ago about kids keeping a box/jar of words that they like. My son and I started that and we have a box full of words that he likes. He is 8 years old. What are some things we could do with a box full of words?

The ideas I've come up with so far:

-pulling out a few words and coming up with a silly sentence

-separating them into groups: nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.

-finding words that he doesn't know the meaning of and defining them

Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

I have an index file of interesting and new vocab words. Most of them have pictured to go with it and a short and simple definition. When my kids are writing rough drafts of stories or essays, I spread them out all over the table and have them choose at least one of the words in their writing. I don't want them to just pick a word and build their writing aroung the word. That's why I spread them out over a large surface area. As they write, usually one of the words pops out at them as a perfect word choice. It's actually quite fun.
