momto2Cs
We're (hopefully) going to be in the market for a new computer soon, as our current one is practically a dinosaur. I'm looking for recommendations for a reasonably priced PC (not Mac), that can run streaming content (and would be friendly to someone learning computer coding/science). We don't use them for games a lot, but for some online learning, word processing, some image editing, etc. Any ideas?
desertflower
For much of your requirements, just about any new laptop or desktop will do. For image editing, if casual, just about any new machine will work, but if getting into more advanced graphic design and Adobe Photoshop type work, then a computer with a good graphics card and a lot of RAM type memory are recommended. In general, we've had good luck with HP, Dell, and Samsung brand machines. Our newest one is an HP laptop and it has worked really well so far. Well built, good battery life, and has handled all of the online streaming or courses that we've tried with it. For the machine to use for learning computer science, one idea is to reload the old machine with a variant of Linux as it can run fairly well on pretty old hardware. You can learn computer science on any machine, but Linux gives easy access to pretty much all parts of the computer and operating system. If just starting out with Linux, one of the Ubuntu variants is a good choice. Particularly, there is a version that runs a light weight desktop that runs well on older hardware called Xubuntu, http://xubuntu.org/ . Hope this helps some.
