Shellydon
My 5th grader is just really not liking school. She is wanting to switch to a get'r done workbook style of school. For reference, we are using Math Mammoth 5 (this will likely not change), MOH+SOTW for history, GSWT for Latin, Apologia Chemistry and Physics, Vocabulary from Latin Roots. We just finished FLL4 and I am letting her have a break from grammar. We are almost done with IEW SWI-A, which she hates. Literature is assigned books from me. I purchased CLE social studies for her 2nd grade sister, and the 5th grader is wanting something work bookish like CLE. Is CLE good for middle school? I would be looking at Language Arts, Science, Reading and Social Studies. We'd keep Math Mammoth for continuity. She is a very visual person, has no interest in learning for fun (unlike her older sister, who adores learning). Is there another work book style curriculum that I should look at? Thanks! In2why
I use and really like CLE math and ordered and tried to like CLE reading. The comprehension worksheets that went with the reading are very good, but the reading itself was dry as dirt. First my son struggled getting through it, I would get frustrated because I knew he could do the reading and was dragging his feet, and then I sat down and read the stories. They are so boring. I am not sure about their other subjects but they are inexpensive so I would only order the bare minimum to try them out.

sewingmama
We love CLE for LA and Math.....the other subjects look totally unappealing. If I was you I would definately use the LA and maybe the reading...only because so many people seem to like it. We haven't used it though as I don't want more workbook learning for my kids. Have you looked at Memoria Press...that is workbooks I believe.
quietchapel
Memoria press is great. We do not care for classical composition, but like everything else.
Shellydon
I didn't realize Memoria Press was workbooks.
Shellydon
I looked at Memoria, it looks like it uses a lot of Rod and Staff
Jasperstone
We love cle maths, and their LA until grade 5.
MamaSprout
I looked at Memoria, it looks like it uses a lot of Rod and Staff It uses different amounts of R&S at different levels- and some of that could be swapped for CLE.
Shellydon
Thanks! I am looking at Moving Beyond the Page too.
quietchapel
Memoria uses very little rod and staff. Just math through I think sixth. You can choose to leave math off when ordering. I think the only other r&s is grammar in sixth- eighth, but MP is replacing that with their grammar recitation. My daughter is technically fifth grade and is doing MP fourth this year. MBtP is very different from MP. I am sure good, just very different.
Curlymom
MBTP really isn't workbooks. It has worksheets, but not necessarily for each lesson. Lessons can involve readings, research, worksheets, projects or comprehension questions. It's kind of a wide ranging curriculum. I wouldn't say MP uses a lot of R&S. We use MM instead of R&S math, and like a previous poster said, they are slowly expanding their grammar. I think the MP grammar goes up through 5th grade now, maybe higher. But MP is definitely workbooks with a few added enrichment projects. My daughter loves the consistency of the workbooks.
quietchapel
Curly mom- mine does, too! She is one of those highly creative kids, but the format of mp has been great for her. She then spends her free time painting, singing, etc
Shellydon
Thank you. Seems like it is worth a closer look. Do you do everything?
almondbutterandjelly
You might check out Galore Park for Science. Since your dd is visual, she might benefit from their colorful science workbooks. I'm thinking she would be in Junior Science 3 or So You Really Want to Learn Science 1. A non-visually appealing, but git er done, history workbook set might be The Story of the USA by Escher (see examples at cbd.com) for US History or Story of Western Civilization by Riese. I like BJU's reading text and accompanying workbook. Colorful and thorough. If you don't want grammar, what are you looking for as far as Language Arts? Shellydon
Thanks everyone. I feel like I am having a total curriculum crisis after 8 years of homeschooling. I was thinking of trying EIW with her for grammar/writing.
quietchapel
I understand the curriculum crisis feeling, and it's a pretty rotten one! We went through that some time ago, but ultimately it led us to MP which has been a very good fit. I am not sure if you were asking if we do everything in MP cores, but essentially we do with some minor alterations. I have one doing K this year also. Hope you find a peaceful solution. SnMomof7
We do really like CLE - just make sure you use the placement tests. Children often place 1-2 levels behind due to rigorous content and differing scope and sequence. It's all good, though! We use CLE for almost everything, but sub out the spelling for Rod and Staff after 2nd, and use ACE for social and science once reading is established. stm4him
We just switched to CLE for everything and added Latin and Greek from Greek n Stuff because they are workbooks that can be done independently, one page per day, and they have answer keys. It is so nice to get so much done each day.
mom31257
I use and love CLE LA, Math, and Reading. I wouldn't like it for SS or Science, but I use BJU for those subjects. There are great workbooks to go along with those subjects in BJU, and the workbooks are what drew me to that publisher. The combination of CLE and BJU has been an awesome one for ds in 6th this year. He is learning so much in a simple way.

mom31257
Very helpful to me, thank you! If you want to see samples of BJU's student activity manuals, you can see them at Christian Book's website. I don't know why BJU doesn't put them on their site. I don't think the samples really do them justice, though. I have BJU's 5th grade history here as well as the 6th history and science if you have any questions. Good luck!
