Ijust can't figure out motive.   :(

Most likely robbery - they were going to check out a car from Craig's List, and most people specify cash only. It's odd that the articles say he had two warrants, one for false statements and one for attempted theft by deception, but then the sheriff makes a point of saying he is from a good family and has no criminal background. Perhaps he means he has never been convicted, but most civilians would regard having two active warrants as a criminal background, I would think.

Edited to add that I just read the family said they were not carrying cash. Perhaps he thought they were?

Agreeing with robbery. I'm betting the couple had a lot of cash on hand to pay for the car they thought they were buying.

Just a few months ago there was a man murdered locally for a game system he advertised on CL. Sad all around.

Just seems insane to lure an old couple with cell phones from 180 miles away just to rob them!  And then why kill them!  Crazy!

I think the warrants the article refers to are for this case--not that there were any prior/pending warrants.

Oh god. So sad. I am sorry for all those they left behind.

And yeah, looks like a robbery gone wrong--maybe he tried to steal, they fought back, etc. It sounds like he turned himself in. If that is the case and he did it I hope he regrets what he did and will have the chance to pay back some of his debt to society.

This hits close to home, literally.  This couple lives close enough to me that we probably shopped at the same grocery store; Mrs. Runion taught at the preschool run by my church.  Not that that makes it any different, but the whole thing is so baffling; what gets into people?  This guy could have robbed them, left the state and kept a low profile for a few months, and no one would have bothered to look for him.  Murder two innocent people in cold blood, however, and they hunt you down.  I hope it is at least a small comfort to their families that they died together and not alone.  And I also hope that this punk has a horrible rest-of-his-life.

The family is from the Atlanta area.  The couple was believed to have traveled to south GA, almost 200 miles away.  The daughters notified Cobb PD (Atlanta) and filed the report with all the known information.  Cobb PD never notified the jurisdiction where the couple was traveling to meet the individual on Craigslist, McRae/Telfair County.  McRae/Telfair County is where they were found.

To me, they assumed that Cobb PD would notify the state, the PD in between, and certainly the PD at the other end.  But Cobb did not.

I hope that makes sense.
