I suddenly have a Pinterest account.  I think my daughter clicked on something on my facebook or something but anyway, I have followers and friends, etc............yet I have never been to the Pinterest website.

Is this something I want to start?  Is it a huge time sucker?  Anything really helpful there?

If so, are there any links to 101 type threads on how to use Pinterest?

Giving a bump. Personally, I think of it as a search engine and bulletin board. I use their search feature for things like recipes, preschool activities, decorating ideas, and humorous quotes. It brings up tons of idea windows. I click on the idea windows aka icons, and I am magically transported to the Web page or blog or whatever that the idea originates from. Then, if I like it, I "pin" it to a "board" I have on Pinterest. I mostly use it for specific preschool categories of ideas; I have about 15 different preschool boards. I have over 2000 pins on, oh, maybe 50? boards. It is really fun.

I find it to be a really helpful way to organize bookmarks. I think there are three keys to making it work well.

1. Set up a variety of boards for different stuff you are interested in. For example, soup recipes, books I want to read, vacation ideas, science experiments, vegetable garden, etc.  Having more boards makes it easier to keep track of stuff.

2. Next install the "pin it" button on your tool bar. This is a free button that you get on the Pinterest website. Once you've got this button as you are traveling around the Internet you find that perfect looking potato soup recipe - click the button and you can automatically save it to your soup recipes board. You can also search within Pinterest for ideas "potato soup recipes" as well.

3. Follow other pinners. You can use this to connect with friends or to follow people or businesses who tend to post content you are interested in. Once you have set up to follow other pinners, when you log on to Pinterest you'll get to see new pins that might be of interest to you and you can decide if you want to click it or save it.

If you give it a try I invite you to take a look at my homeschooling boards. http://www.pinterest.com/hsuccess/

I too am Pinterest challenged.

I created an account because we're kinda sorta maybe starting to think about building our retirement house and I thought I might find some good decorating ideas there.  But it doesn't seem to be very user friendly at all.

Really? I think it's very easy! LOL--I'm not terribly techie, but if you ask me, maybe I could help with your question.

It can be a bit of a time suck, but is less than a lot of things I could be doing. I go through periods where I am just pinning tv stuff or humor, and then right now I am looking at a lot of educational stuff and have stopped following tv boards. It is great at organizing all these science, history, and other educational things I could never bookmark and find again. I also love following people and seeing pins pop up I would never otherwise find, ideas I would never think of. I also have a lot of recipe pins and some house stuff, things for holidays, etc. All somewhat organized so that I can go browse later through the pins and see what is really worth keeping or reading. I have a link to my boards in my signature.
