LillianinAL
I am looking for a new approach to phonics/ reading instruction for my ds 7, adopted at 3 from Ukraine. He is behind in language and ADHD. We have used Explode the Code ABC, a little 100 Easy Lessons, tried OPGTR, and now using Bear Necessities from Dancing Bears. He can sound out a word, but not consistently. Thoughts? Thanks,
Lecka
Spire is an Orton-Gillingham reading program, I am pretty sure. Barton reading is an Orton-Gillingham program a lot of people like -- it has instruction DVDs. I think it is worth a look, too, as a similar program. Lecka
There is a thing where reading programs can be categorized like -- general intensity, then higher intensity, then even higher intensity, depending on how much intensity the student needs. This can have to do with how much practice there is, how often new concepts are introduced, how quickly it builds up with harder sentences to read, what order it goes in, etc. The other reading programs you have tried, are all good and everything, but for a general intensity. Spire is for a higher intensity. There are other options in the higher-intensity category (with clue words like "dyslexia" "struggling reader" "special needs" "Tier 3") and that are not intended for a 5- or 6-year-old who will learn from a general-intensity program. I think it is good you are looking in the higher-intensity category. But I don't know about price or how easy it is to use for a homeschool parent, and there are things that can make a quality program difficult to use at home. That is something to look at. If you have access to it and can get help in using it (if you might need help -- you might not at all) then that would not matter for you. For me -- I do better with the ones that are giving more hand-holding, but plenty of people are just annoyed by hand-holding and prefer not to have too much of it built in to the programs they use. LillianinAL
Thank you for your replies, ladies. I like Barton and plan to use it when he's ready. Unfortunately he failed parts A and C of the screening, so I ordered Lips to do first. We will see howit goes. Thanks
