French audiobooks and paper books that go with them?

Recommended Posts

We have long chapter books his tutor sends us one chapter at a time which we study, but I need smaller books ds10 and his sister can listen to in the car while following along with the book. I did not see anything on audible. I'd rather it be too young than too complicated (we find the Tin Tin DVDs really fast, for example). Thanks so much!

Marlene Jobert has a ton of books that include her reading the story on CD.  My kids love them.  Probably available on amazon.fr or amazon.ca.  Our library has Petit Nicolas on CD, which is HILARIOUS, but a bit more complicated.  I'm sure you can get the standard Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events, etc, etc, on audio as well from amazon.fr- take a look!

You can also likely find a lot of things on amazon.ca

You know, I did not see much in the way of audiobooks, but perhaps I'm having an off day with searches. I've ordered DVDs and such from there though.

DH is going to Toronto next month and I'm going to hand him a list of bookstores. And look into the links posted above; thanks all.

J'aime Lire has a disc to accompany the main story in the magazine. DS used to love these when he was smaller.

Do you know this site with public domain books that you can stream or download?  There are some goodies in there for children (Comtesse de Segur, Jules Verne, Dumas...) http://www.loyalbooks.com/language/French

Gallimard Jeunesse has lots of audiobooks; http://www.gallimard-jeunesse.fr/searchjeunesse/advanced/(order)/author/(format)/1?catalog[0]=1&age=6%3B9&SearchAction=1

As does Hachette: http://www.lelivrequiparle.com/index_editeurs.php/editeurs_id/121

Le Petit Nicolas series are fabulous, I'm reading it myself.  We've also got Little House on the Prairie translated into both French and Spanish, and some of the Beatrix Potter books in French, amongst others.  Perhaps it is because we are in the UK, but it's not difficult to get hold of French story books (sold) online.

Librivox has audio books in French.  I do better with those than with, say, Harry Potter, which is read really fast.   There are fairy tales there, longer French ones, not like the short Grimm's ones.  They also have Verne and Dumas and others.  They have Jane Austen translated into French.  Only stuff that is out of copyright is there but there are lots of classics.  Some of the the readers read nice and slowly.  I tried doubling up with the Harry Potter, which I can read in French without much trouble, but the reader I happen to have moved so fast that I had trouble reading along, let alone understanding.  I do understand a lot of the Harry Potter when I listen only, but only because I know the story so well that I can fill in the many bits in my imagination.  It just is too fast for me to get more than the jist of a sentence.  It isn't very entertaining.  What did work for me was to read a chapter in French, and then listen to the chapter.  I'd say it doubled my understanding of what I was hearing.  I should do it more because obviously, this is a really powerful learning tool for converting my reading ability into listening ability, one of my major goals, but it takes time, much more time than just sticking on something to listen to while I am doing dishes or going to sleep.

Nan
