Almost done with AAR2 but DS7 refuses to read stories.

Recommended Posts

My DS (7) is almost finished with the lessons in AAR2.  He understands the rules and applies them pretty well.  But, he refuses to read any of the stories in the books except the first two.  He is intimidated by the length of the stories and the number of words on the page.  He also is still sounding out the majority of words (in anything beyond the first two stories).  What do I do now?  I don't feel he is ready for AAR3.  How do I increase his confidence and word memorization??  Help??

There have been a few threads on this. One idea that I remember was to go through the word lists with him until they are automatic. Another was to slow down & reread previous stories.

I use the readers from AAR (among other things) with my emergent readers. We usually take several days with each story - up to a week, in some cases. I usually have them read one or two pages the first day, then repeat yesterday's reading and add another page or two. Then, repeat all the readings up to that point and do another couple of pages, etc.

All except for one of my kids so far has had to have what seems like 10,000 "impressions" (readings) of a word before it becomes automatic in their head. 10,000 "the" sightings, 10,000 "she" and "and" sightings before they'll read it without sounding it out first. I don't feel like I'm exaggerating much.  But they've all gotten there eventually. :-)
