Jenrae
Help! After cleaning our carpets tonight, we realized that our vacuum is just NOT picking up the pet hair. I really need to purchase a new vacuum after realizing HOW much dog hair is left in the carpet fibers. If you are a pet owner, what vacuum works for you? blondeviolin
We have a Shark Navigator that we are very happy with. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005KMDV9A/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1419046098&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

Random
Shark! It's great and much cheaper than a Dyson. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shark-rotator-lift-away-pro/prod10960151.ip?navAction=
Mergath
We have this: http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Windtunnel-Bagless-Upright-UH70935/dp/B00F5DS7J8 and I love it. We have three cats with fine fur that gets stuck on everything, and this does a great job of sucking it all up. And I have a black rug and white, orange, and gray cats, so if there's hair, you can tell. ;) It's a bit heavy, but you can't beat the price. I wondered about the Dyson vacuum. My husband actually mentioned it this evening, but said they were too expensive. I had a upright Panasonic years ago, but that was pre-dog days though. For the basement I have a refurbished Miele that we picked up a few years ago, but I hate it. I really, really want an upright for the everyday vacuuming. (I'm like you, I vacuum as a hobby! haha) I'll take a look at the link. Thank you for your suggestions!
Jenrae
Shark! It's great and much cheaper than a Dyson. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shark-rotator-lift-away-pro/prod10960151.ip?navAction= I saw this a few weeks ago at Sam's and wondered if it worked well for pet hair. I didn't think we were making a purchase so soon, but I can't believe the hair my vacuum left behind!! Do you have more than one pet? I vacuume every single day. I. have. to. :) Thanks for the suggestion!

Maybe I can try it out someone. I'll search to see if a Sears store nearby has one that I can try out. (If they still do that.) It sounds like it has the suction I need though. Thank you! Have you had that experience? If not, maybe I am am remembering it wrong. We've not had an issue. Two cats, five kids with no clogs. It stops suctioning well if the filter is covered, but take it out, smack it around or rinse it out and it works just fine.
Pawz4me
Our central vac system works much better than any upright/canister vac I've ever had. But that's probably no help. ;) Over the years I've had really good luck with Hoover Wind Tunnels. And right now I have a Eureka Boss that's about ten years old and still works fairly well. I use it for spot vacuuming, especially around the cats' litter boxes. I've not heard very good things about Dysons. And when I've looked at them in stores they've seemed really cheaply made. emzhengjiu
We had a Dyson Animal that was given to us when a friend upgraded. We loved it, but it stopped working a few months ago. I've not had the money to get it repaired. My old Hover works well enough, but doesn't pick up anywhere near as much as the Dyson did. zoobie
We love the Dyson. I would be spending a fortune on bags. I have two now, including the original one I bought 11 years ago. At the hairiest, we had 4 cats and 2 dogs, 1 of whom was a 100 lb golden retriever. She could fill up a vacuum cannister by sneezing. :) I've only used the Hoover Wind Tunnel at my dad's house, and they have no pets and nothing that produces a mess. ;) He keeps talking about wanting a Dyson after using ours. The last house we rented at the beach had a Shark that was terrible, but that was probably a mistreated castoff or something. If/when a Dyson dies, we will replace it with another Dyson. I don't expect modern appliances to live indefinitely though. (Thinking of my grandmother's 50 year old metal rocket ship vacuum.)
Jenrae
So I see there are those of you who DO like the Dyson! I guess it's all personal preference! Thank you to each of you for your suggestions! I will be on the search right after Christmas, as I have now had family arrive for Christmas and will be pretty busy. Merry Christmas to you all! lewber
We have central vac and a Miele. With a crazy yellow lab that sheds like crazy. I prefer the Miele. My husband likes the central vac.
StephanieZ
On a previous thread I thought I read a few posters saying this vacuum gets clogged frequently with pet hair. Have you had that experience? If not, maybe I am am remembering it wrong. I have that same shark navigator. I have to say, if any household could clog a vacuum with hair, ours could (5 people, three females with very long thick hair, 3 hairy dogs, 5 hairy cats) . . . and we've never actually clogged that vacuum with hair. We've clogged it a few times with legos and construction debris, but that was easy enough to fix. It's actually been a very sturdy vacuum. I kill vacuums, usually with in 12-18 months. This one has lasted at least a couple years. My solution is to get rid of all carpeting. :) I hate that stuff, and am finally achieving my goal of a carpet-less household (excepting a few small area rugs). Until a few months ago, we had lots of carpet, though, and the vacuum did/does pretty well. I've been quite satisfied with it, but my expectations are not that high for vacuums, lol. Now that we're eliminating all carpeting, my next vacuum will be a canister vacuum, though.
hornblower
I'm less than 50% carpet in our main living areas (just bedrooms left) but now feel sorry for my old dogs. The arthritic wobbly ones really don't like the floors. I'm now looking at runners for the hall ...
StephanieZ
I'm less than 50% carpet in our main living areas (just bedrooms left) but now feel sorry for my old dogs. The arthritic wobbly ones really don't like the floors. I'm now looking at runners for the hall ... LOL, our dogs are pretty savvy about finding soft spots. They head for the nearest couch or bed . . . or a coat or blanket tossed on the floor . . . or a lap . . . I agree, soft bedding is needed for dogs! (And, cats go wherever they want anyway, lol). The Kurunda dog beds are awesome. We have them in our kennel at the vet hospital, and they are bullet proof. I think I got them about 8 years ago, and through daily hosing and disinfecting and thousands of hyper dog-days, they are still going strong. I think we've bought a handful of cheap replacement parts over the years, even with all that use. For household use, I'd imagine they'd last decades in perfect shape. One of these days, I'll likely get one for home, especially if any of our dogs gets too creaky to hop up on a couch. http://kuranda.com/dog-beds/standard-dog-bed
