kiwik
The kids got their class placements for next year and seem fairly happy with them. Ds7 finally recovered from last year and won an achievement award for the final term. Ds5 did OK in his first year but not well enough to convince them that he really didn't need to spend 7 terms in year 1 just because he was five weeks too young. As it happens the more advanced kud who missed by 2 days hasn't been put up either and is in the same class. At least ds5 isn't going into a y1/2 class where he is near the top. I sometimes feel mean that I have set him up to appear average when he isn't but I hope to control his perfectionist tendencies that way. Anyone else just started summer holidays? Tsuga
Tomorrow is the start of winter break, but I'm happy for you.
SKL
Just started winter break here too. It kind of feels like the end of an era, though. :P The kids' "regular" teacher (who only taught them for 1.5 mos so far) returns from maternity leave in January. The kids had tests in every subject this week, and I'm glad because that means they don't have to "retain" anything specific over the break. I have not been doing much afterschooling recently because of all the tests, homework, and holiday stuff. I do have a pile of stuff I want to plow through over the break. We'll see if it happens. Oh, but we will be doing 10 days of summer over the break, because we are traveling to South America. I hadn't really thought of it as "summer vacation" before. :) Needless to say we'll be studying geography and Spanish among other things .... kiwik
Well break is stretching it. They have about 6 weeks but I only have Xmas and New Year.
Tsuga
We have 8 weeks for break over summer here. I think we should all get four weeks every year, full stop. Stagger it June, July or August depending on the region of the country you're in (i.e. a July vacation for everyone in Georgia I suspect would be unpleasant for those who can't travel). Maybe someday...
kiwik
Well NZ tradionally has before Christmas and January. Every now and then though someone points out that February is hotter than January and if would make more sense to take 10 days at Christmas then all of February. It would be easier for the kids as the classrooms here are air conditioned and can be rather uncomfortable - a lot can be done outside in the shade though. It would be really annoying for many businesses though especially in areas where harvest is starting then. They do 10 weeks on 2 weeks off for 3 terms then 10 weeks followed by summer. It feels like the are having holidays every 10 minutes and it often takes all the next term to pay the holiday care bill.
Tsuga
Oh yes, we have winter, mid-Winter (ski break, ugh) and then spring and then summer. It wouldn't be SO bad if we didn't have such a long summer break. My honey is taking his vacation this winter to mind the kids. Did I mention I have the best man in the world in my life? I know you all probably think you have him but actually, he's mine. Sorry but someone has to have him.
