Lanny
Possibly of interest to some of you. This was mentioned in the weekly email newsletter I receive from About.com about Distance Learning. Here's the link: http://distancelearn.about.com/od/virtualhighschools/fl/How-to-Take-Free-Online-AP-Classes-from-edX.htm?nl=
MarkT
this was actually announced here awhile back but they have added new courses so it always good to have a reminder post :)
Chrysalis Academy
I've been doing the Biology and Enviromental Science classes. Frankly, I'm somewhat disappointed. I don't know if it's because they are designed as high school/teach to the test type courses, but they are much less engaging than most of the other EdX and Coursera classes I've audited. foxbridgeacademy
I was also doing the ES course and found it kind of boring and lacking, at least as a full course (yes I realize there are multiple parts). ETA: I don't mean to put it down. We will be using edX courses in the future. I am so thankful that there are sites like this. I guess my issue is that I find Env. Sci. to be a very interesting topic and the edX course wasn't very interesting to me. Then again I probably didn't give it enough of my attention since we're not doing ES right now. Chrysalis Academy
I agree, I love online courses and I'm extremely grateful that they exist, both for my own education and to use with the kids in the future. But some are better than others, and these two took a subject I really like and made it either boring or unclear. I will definitely be checking out the rest of their High School offerings, though, and Dartmouth is offering an Intro to ES class on Edx starting in February that looks promising. 3andme
I wanted to point out another web site that has free videos and AP Prep called Get A Five. It currently has Calc AB, World History, US History, and Biology. The US History is the only one I've looked at but the videos were good.
