Barton question regarding US Dept of Edu...

Recommended Posts

Before you get too freaked out, keep scrolling through the google results.  When I put in those terms, I got hits showing that Wilson (regular and Fundations), etc. got the same blow-off.  These are all programs that have a clear track record of good results with thoughtful users.  Considering the stupid mess the ps are doing for reading instruction, I don't think we can give them much mind.  It seems like gov't money gets in there and funds these asinine programs that don't get results but that have complicated systems that hog time and appease the system.

So it looks like those pages are saying there's not enough of the fancy research evidence that the gov't particular wants.  Oh well.

Sorry to be so pleasant about it, but I spent part of this summer chatting with a (very nice btw) reading intervention specialist at the ps.  You wouldn't believe the stuff they say.  "Oh, you wouldn't be able to do it at home.  It's very complicated and we had to go to extra courses to learn it."  What stupidity.  All sorts of mess on context and guessing, no actual phonemic awareness building and OG, when OG is THE proven methodology.

There are some OG programs (Hermann would be one to look up) that have all that gov't money flowing into them to fund that kind of research.  I agree Barton doesn't have EVERYTHING I could dream up.  And I think when you're buying for a school you need curriculum that HAS all those modalities, all those options.  It's pretty one-dimensional frankly.  But that doesn't mean it wouldn't work for your one dc in your particular situation, especially if you use it with common sense.

That was my initial reaction, so I appreciate the reassurance. Thank you. I thought it was a little funky. Plus, 4-5 year old research... things could have changed a lot in that amount of time.

I wish I could find it but there were two different schools in California that started using Barton in Middle Schools in small group and one on one instruction to try and turn around the abysmal results they had been getting with the program they were currently using.  The results were dramatic, and overwhelmingly positive compared to what they used before and for nearly all the students.  The students that did not show much improvement had many other issues.  The study was not Barton linked.  I found it through an independent resource.  I wish I could find it again.

The government has no clue what they are doing with regard to education.  And the local education system doesn't either.  The system that is currently being used in the schools where I live is NOT WORKING.  In fact, it is SO not working that there are lawsuits.  The assessor that evaluated my kids told me the only way my kids had any chance of getting proper remediation through the local schools was to sue the school district.  I chose not to but others have.

My nephew, extremely bright dyslexic, went through this system and barely graduated High School.  He struggles to read at all.  He isn't the only one.  The system they are using actually caused more harm than good.  His mom is a teacher here and she couldn't get them to see just how bad the program is.

I take everything the government says about education with a grain of salt, now.  My mother is a trained reading specialist.  She has higher degrees in reading and Education.  She says the same thing.  Her training was nearly useless for helping her own grandkids.  The government does not understand dyslexia.  The scientific community is starting to.  The government is way behind.

You are not in a classroom setting.  You are working one on one with your child.  You will have a much better opportunity to tweak and style Barton to what your child needs.  Barton might not work well at all in a classroom setting and no system is perfect for every child.  The ps educational system needs something they can do on a mass scale with lots and lots of kids at the same time without a whole lot of individual tweaking.  You don't.

Hugs and best wishes.
