BJU Science - a few more questions

Recommended Posts

We joined the ranks by signing up for Science 6. I am so excited for my son to have this opportunity. :)

Do we need to purchase any supplies for this course?

Are there hands on requirements beyond the class, text and Student Activity manual work?

How do you help your kiddo prep for quizzes and tests?

Is note taking expected or recommended?

Thanks :). We await the arrival of our books and so we will start after Christmas.

I have two kids taking Science 6 at the moment. They are more than half finished with the course.

As for taking notes, on days when there is a Quick Check assigned, I have my kids do that as well as take notes on the section of the text. For notes, they mainly find terms highlighted in bold and write them down with a definition.

They use the study guide plus their notes to study for quizzes and tests. After some getting used to, this system has worked well, and they have been getting A's. I have not been helping them study since I want them to try to learn how to take a class independently.

At the beginning of the course, I bought all of the items for experiments which were (I can't remember how it was worded) on the list noted as required/mandatory/necessary/recommended. I put all of the items in a box, and my kids pull out what they need as they need it. This has taken the stress out of the experiment aspect. Mrs. Vick demonstrates the experiments in the video, so it is not necessary to do all of them. However, I think doing the experiments is my kids' favorite part of the course. There are not really very many required experiments, though.

Dh and I are both very impressed with Science 6 and Mrs. Vick. I am very glad that I somehow stumbled into BJU Science.

I'm excited for your son, too!  I love this course and we're  starting it after Christmas, too.

You can purchase supplies for experiments or not.  Most (all, I think?) of the experiments are done by Mrs. Vick in the videos.  We bought supplies so my son could do them on his own, as well.

I don't think there are hands-on requirements.  But, you can do the experiments, if you choose.

To prepare for tests and quizzes, we reviewed vocabulary and reviewed the concepts for the chapter.  You'll get a nice schedule for lessons, quizzes, and tests (and a list of supplies for experiments) along with your book order.

I would strongly encourage note taking.  And outlining the chapter, if possible.  It's a lot of information, and I think if a student is going to get high grades on the tests and quizzes, note taking and outlining will help a lot!

I have had a very busy semester, so I haven't sat down with my son to teach taking notes from a lecture, but I hope to do so next semester. He does all of the Student Activity Manual pages, and I check them. I discuss anything that is wrong or could have explained further. There are a lot of sets of Quizlet flash cards to study and test over, too, so I've utilized those for the chapter tests.

He has made lower grades on quizzes when he thinks he's ready and really hasn't studied. He has made high Bs and As on the tests, so I think Quizlet has made up for me not having him take notes.

We've done a few of the activities and experiments but not very many. I just pick and choose the ones I think will be useful, fun, and easy to gather the supplies. I really think experiments are over-rated in what you actually learn. I think the best benefit comes just from learning scientific processes and how to write about it more than what you learn from observing the actual experiment.

Thanks for answering my questions and giving me ideas to implement. Our books came today and I like what I see. It's just about Christmas Break around here so I'm not sure we'll start until after New Year's but that gives me a bit of time to familiarize myself with the online course stuff.  :coolgleamA:

**I didn't know about Quizlet so I'm excited to look into it.

BJU Heritage Studies 6 is worthwhile, even without 'teaching' it.

Dd learned a ton so far. It covers a different set of studyskills and dd wrote several compare / contrast essays about world religions.

Now we are working on implementing the studyskill she learned at BJU into other subjects.

beginning January dd has her history exam, I am very curious to know the results.

I think dd is wel prepared through BJU, but time will see...

I've been tempted to do this course, as well, but I saw the course is only one semester.

How did you make the content work for the rest of the year?

Heritage Studies 6 has 165 lessons only grade 1-3 are semestercourses I thought,

I live in Belgium and have a different frequency of subject as we have more subjects.

so the science....is it doable without the dvd's or online class? Can it be done well with just the books and doing experiments at home?

We do BJU Science without dvd's or online class since grade 2.

I can imagine a dvd/online option can do some things better then me.

But it is what we do: books and experiments/demonstrations.

And it works fine for dd.

I think labs are critical, so I would do at least some of them. IMHO watching isn't the same. You can get lab kits, or gather your own supplies, or do another lab kit with similar subject matter (like the ASK science kits).

Are there hands on requirements beyond the class, text and Student Activity manual work?

They recommend you DO the labs. We did a lot of them. If you get the stuff the kids can do them alongside the video.

How do you help your kiddo prep for quizzes and tests?

At first I had the kids write out section review answers when assigned. Then we tried highlighting and noting which questions they were answering. They did better with the highlighting (grades were higher) so we stuck with that. By the end of the chapter the kids should have highlighted each section and chapter review question - so I have them review those. Then I run through them all and we discuss anything weird. I have them read through the chapter summary (it's so weird to me that they weren't doing that - but they have to LEARN those skills), and any bolded words. Lastly, they have to review the pictures and any notes in margins. With that - they test. I don't help with quizzes. The student should be able to handle that (I probably helped with 6, and maybe half of 7...). Prepping for a test doesn't take more than a half hour. It's really all in making sure the daily lessons are being done thoroughly.

Is note taking expected or recommended?

We don't take notes.

I just wrote a long blog post about BJU middle school science - so hopefully it will help - https://friedclamsandsweettea.wordpress.com/2014/12/19/bju-middle-school-science-whats-it-like/

Mrs. Twain, how old are your two kids? Mine are 12 and 10. Ds12 is doing Apologia General Science at home independently. He is half way done. Ds10 is simply reading Apologia Zoology 2 and Zoology 3 at home by himself while our co-op teaches the two books and does the hands-on things.

I am considering getting BJU online science 6 for them. Or for the younger to try.

My kids doing Science 6 are almost 12 and 10.  My almost-10-year old is doing fine in the course because she has an aptitude for science and can understand concepts very quickly.

Another thing--

I do like having paper quizzes and tests. They give me a record of the work the kids have done, and dh can easily review how the kids are doing.

Two more questions: Which edition book is for the online science 6? Do you buy the paper quizzes and tests from BJU or are they available to print online?

Thanks!

We did BJU Science without DVD's or online classes through grade 7. I love teaching science and we loved doing the labs and demonstrations. The materials are very homeschool friendly through grade 6, less so for the higher grades.

We switch to secular materials for high school. We skip Earth science in 8th and do a high school level Physical Science (ICP) in 8th instead. One of my kids really likes DIVE and we used that. The other I continued as teacher.

The online course uses the third edition of the textbook.  I bought two of them used on Amazon.

I ordered new activity manuals from BJU.  I think I also ordered the tests/quizzes from BJU, too, but I can't quite remember.  lol

In the future, I won't bother buying the teacher's editions of anything.  All I ever look at are the answers to the tests and the schedule of lessons.  I believe those things are available online when one buys the course..although I need to double check that to make sure.

Yes, the TMs are available online.  I only use them for chapter reviews and to help once in a while with studying terms.  I use the online tests and quizzes.

  • 3 weeks later...

Do I found out I can still buy the $99 sale. I would like ds to try Science 6. So what books do I need to buy? Student book and what else? I found student book used on amazon for good price.
