Woodland Mist Academy
What style do you require for high school papers? I'm thinking of requiring different styles for different subjects.
Chrysalis Academy
Good question. I "grew up" doing APA style papers, which I think are most common in science. In all the homeschool writing books I see, it's all MLA all the time. I can see a value in learning to do both, I guess. Although I thinking getting to know one style so it's second nature and you don't have to look it up is beneficial too. I "speak" APA, so I always have to look MLA up, which is a big pain. It feels like a foreign language! But I think that even in college humanities classes they accepted APA style (granted, this was maaaaany years ago! ;) so I may not remember correctly.) 8filltheheart
I really wouldn't stress over it one way or the other. The main issue is knowing what to cite (including paraphrases). The differences in citation style are really more just a matter of formatting than anything else. Different profs have different preferences and they will tell your student what they require. 8filltheheart
Rose, My dd had a prof that insisted on Chicago style. Profs usually have a preference and require that format. FWIW, for bibliographies there are online formatters for different styles.
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
If this is in prep for college papers then it is hard to say. I was taught Chicago in high school but my alma mater produced their own style guide that we were given freshman year and expected to follow. (I think the psychology department had an exception and used APA.)
Luckymama
My older kids learned MLA in high school but had no problem using APA and Chicago as needed in college. Dd14 has been using MLA for a few years. She asked to take AP Psych next year; I'll introduce her to APA then.
