So is anyone heading out to shop tonight or early tomorrow?

I am not a shopper anymore. At all. Not keen on the crowds, buying (mostly useless) stuff, florescent lighting, etc....

But, I am heading out soon because my mom wants to go. She really, really wants someone to go with her. (That someone would be me.)

I think my best plan of action would be to smuggle in my coffee thermos & go hide under a rack. Wish me luck.

Good luck!

Years and years ago DH's dad and my dad talked all of DH's siblings and their kids and us into going shopping on Black Friday.  They each had specific items they wanted to get and wanted us all to go too.  NEVER.EVER.EVER.AGAIN.  Both dads ditched us after a while and the rest of us were left standing in line for hours for things we 1.  didn't need and 2. didn't want anyway.  We all vowed we would never shop on Black Friday again, unless it was in the comfort of our own homes.

I hope things go smoothly and you and your mom have a wonderful time (but yeah, smuggle your coffee in and find a nice quiet rack in a corner to climb into :) ).

Nope. I will be at our town's Christmas Parade to watch my dd dance (ballet, nutcracker bits). If I were not doing that I would be:

1) cleaning in anticipation of Christamas decorating

2) making turkey soup

Or

3) going to a museum special exhibit that I thought looked cool.

After the parade I will probably get through 2) and maybe start on 1).

Nope, I've never been a shopper.  There is nothing that could convince me to go through that. Plus, I like to sleep late.

  Well, I'm heading out in a minute, so the sleeping in thing is not an issue. I'll probably be sleeping late tomorrow morning, once I get in from tonight.... :tongue_smilie:

Going to a museum exhibit is a great idea, Betty. I love stuff like that.

I'm a little bummed, because I don't think I'll make it. I have no interest in shopping at malls or big box stores. When I have time I will order stuff online. I'd rather expend time and physical energy on something fun rather than shopping. I guess some people actually find shopping fun, so it works for them.

Nope! I'm done my Christmas shopping! I have gone in twice in the past with my best friend mainly just to people watch. It's interesting to watch the frenzy and how different personalities handle it.

I should add, the people watching isn't a judgementing thing. I genuinely have a fascination/love of learning about humans thru observing them in everyday life.

I shopped online all day today, and will do a combination of online and in-person shopping tomorrow. I'm not going out tonight. The people are animals and the parking is a nightmare. I got the exact stuff I wanted online without having to stand in any lines.

Well, OK, there was one video game I couldn't get online... YET! :D  I'll try Walmart tomorrow morning to see if they still have any in stock, but I don't have much hope. It's not a big deal, though -- I got the expensive stuff online, and this particular game will probably go on sale again between now and Christmas anyway.

So what is your diagnosis of me sitting in/under a rack with my coffee?

(I kwym. I like people watching too, sometimes.)

I honestly didn't know that was an option. I thought everything was closed because it is a holiday and stuff opens early tomorrow? It now starts at night? Clearly I am not in the shopping loop.

Well, I am going to bed to sleep off my food coma right now. I will sleep right through the whole thing, if I am lucky.

Those poor people working in the stores.  I grew up with parents who worked holidays, but they are in the medical profession. It goes with the territory, but it was hard on us as kids. Until a few years ago, my mom worked either Thanksgiving or Christmas and my dad usually worked all of both. We always take a moment to give thanks for all the people who can't be with their families on Thanksgiving and Christmas due to work obligations, but we have always said 'emergency and essential workers." I guess we need to change that.

Good luck.  I am not a shopper ordinarily and I most certain couldn't ordinarily be paid to go Black Friday shopping.

That said, two or three years ago my DH and I got conned into going with the whole family.  The big Target door buster was the 50 inch TVs.  We didn't show up to Target until 10 pm and walked out the door with two of them after they weren't claimed by midnight.  Then we had the lovely problem of trying to figure out how to transport them home.....amidst Black Friday madness.  It was pretty funny, all evening my DH was saying he was going to get one, and everyone else was telling him he was dreaming.

I ended up with dh at Walmart at six earlier for their huge one hour deal thing because he was determined to get one of those mattress toppers that were dirt cheap.  (Well, for memory foam mattress toppers, anyway.)  Oh.  My.  God. What a nightmare.  The employees weren't allowed to unwrap the pallets with the Black Friday deals until exactly six, and people were huddled around the pallets, grabbing things through the plastic and holding them until six.    Some guy was on one of the motorized scooters and was yelling to the people waiting that if anyone got in his way, he was going to run them over.  Another guy was sitting on top of a pile of the merchandise, screaming into his phone.  I went to find a new sheet that would fit the mattress plus the topper, and as I did someone near the back of the store started shrieking.  A grown up voice.  Bloodcurdling screaming.  And a woman actually shoved my six year old and almost trampled her to get a coffee maker.

It was really bizarre.  People acted like hyenas fighting over a gazelle or something.  I'm definitely not going out next year.  Holy frigging crap.  And we didn't even get near electronics.  I don't even want to know what it was like back there.  I'm guessing that's where the screaming was coming from.

Mergath: Wow. Both times lately that I've been temptd to go out for Black Friday deals, I've found a good enough deal online to keep me inside instead. Iv'e been out Friday afternoon several years  and met NO craziness at all.

I went out later during the day on Friday a couple of years ago and it wasn't bad.  I think this was so bad because it was the first round of sales and it was only for an hour.  Next year, if dh wants to do any Black Friday shopping, he can go by himself.  I'll stay home and eat pie like a sane person. ;)

I'm back. Actually, we went to Kohl's. There were people, but not bad. Had to wait in line behind about 4 or 5 people to pay, but that was only a few minutes. Good deals with my mom's coupons & she was happy. It turned out to be entirely pleasant & I didn't need coffee, chocolate, a book, or even to hide in/under a rack in order to survive. Lol!

Stacia, it's tradition for my dd's to go together. Tonight they left at 10:00 and were home by 3:30. They spent the majority of time at the mall. They seemed to have gotten everything they wanted to get. Now I'm wondering if I want to venture out tomorrow to see what's left. I don't usually set foot in stores until the week after.

We went out at 4pm and waited at the McDonalds in the premium outlets for the shops to open. There was long lines at some shops like Coach, Kate Spade and Disney but people aren't really buying. We left at around 11pm for Target and manage to get jeans in slim sizes for my boys for $5,99. We reached home after 1am.

We manage to get better prices a few weeks ago then tonight. Walmart and Best Buy are always mayhem on Black Friday so we usually avoid them.

I sent DH to get one black Friday item (not anything electronic or overly desirable to the masses) from Target yesterday at 6pm.  He said he had to wait 5ish minutes to get in the door, that the employees were routing people through the store certain ways, and that some areas, like healthy and beauty, were entirely roped off (he was hoping to grab a bottle of shampoo, but couldn't).  In the end, he was in and out in 20 minutes.

DH, DD13 and I are headed out this morning to hit the 5am opening of Cabellas.

To buy a six hundred pound gun safe. The size of an upright freezer.

I tried to convince DH that the demand for huge metal boxes would not be that high, but he REALLY wants the new safe at the sale price. The store promises free coffee, so I'm good with it.

Dh is keeping his sister company Black Friday shopping :) She really likes going but her kids (15, 13) will no longer do it with her. Dh doesn't get to spend time one-on-one with her.

He bought a shirt for dd19 and is getting me my Bath & Body Works stuff. And after dsil is done at the mall, they're going to head across the parking lot to window shop at Cabelas :D

Oh. My. I have tears running down my face.  :smilielol5:  :smilielol5:  The visual in my head of this is just hysterical. Not so much for you I'm sure. Dh thinks I've lost my mind.

Thanks for the laugh Mergath!

I did my BF shopping online in my pjs with a cup of coffee.

Dh went to Walmart a couple of years ago on Black Friday and said people were crazy over the pallets of cheap bed sheets.  He thought it was really depressing since he had the sense that this was the only way many of the people could afford new sheets.  But, yeah, he described it much like you did.

This year dh and dd needed to get dd a new laptop for second semester college classes.  They planned their strategy, which included NOT going into Best Buy or Walmart (shopping online there to comparison shop).  They were in and out at Office Depot in a flash, very satisfied with their trip, and DONE.

My oldest son and I went out last night. We love to people watch.  This year we also picked up a case of legos for #2 son.  Nothing crazy to report.  Thankfully, our walmart must be one of the calmer ones--everyone we ran into was pleasant and friendly.  Our Target was practically empty compared to last year--no lines and lots of big ticket items still on the shelves when we got there.

I'm back! I got every single thing I wanted, including the video games that I had been sure would have been sold out.

I haven't really slept for more than a few hours since Tuesday night so I'm getting a little punchy, but I'm still ready for more shopping in a little while. :)

Happy, happy, happy! :hurray:

I have no idea what is on sale where. I have never shopped on Black Friday with the intention of actually purchasing anything. I think I've gone once or twice in the afternoon just to get out of the house.

Most of my shopping is finished because I was anticipating being at dd's for 2 weeks in December. Everything is wrapped and ready to go under the tree (which we will get tomorrow afternoon). I think I'm actually going to have a pretty boring December because all my stuff is finished.

I shop for my elderly mom's gifts also, and I've had her stuff finished and wrapped for a few weeks as well.

So I was almost tempted to head out to Macy's because the bearpaw boots I want are super cheap today but luckily they aren't available at either Macy's near me. I would be thrilled to get them for under 50 but am glad I don't have to go to the store for them. Not only if Macy's online had free shipping today

We got the gun safe DH wanted - cabellas was great because they totally ran out and were willing to honor the Black friday price and special order the safes.  DH will get his safe in about 5 weeks with no extra charge for shipping.  That's a huge deal on a 500 pound item!

I stopped and picked up a year's supply of socks and underwear and cheap headphones so I'm happy.
