Immersion reading with Kindle

I've reviewed some past threads on this, but I want to double check before I commit the cash. I'm considering getting a kindle for dd11 for the immersion reading. Which one do I need? I'm not interested in all the bells and whistles, just the immersion reading. 😄

Amazon is advertising the kindle fire for a pretty decent price. Does the kindle fire have immersion reading, or do I need to get the HDX one?

My apologies for the disjointed post...I've got a good case of food coma going on!

TIA!

D

ETA- Nevermind! I finally figured it out- the least expensive buy in for the immersion reading would be the kindle HD 7. Sorry everyone....I'm sure you all already knew this! Lol!

Hi!  Food induced coma going on here, too.  zzzzzzzz

The Kindle Fire HD 6 and the Kindle Fire HD 7 both do Immersion Reading and are cheaper than the HDX.  I don't see why you would need the HDX for your daughter to read.

Of the two, if you can afford it, I would go with the Kindle Fire HD7 instead of the 6.  The screen is a good size for reading and the operating system has been updated.  The sound system is stereo, too. It sounds much better than the mono version in the HD6.

Thank you OneStep- exactly the kind of insight I need. ;-)

Do kindles have a history of going on sale for Black Friday or cyber Monday? It seems they are discounted right now, but Im wondering if they will go down even further.

I have bookshare for her on my iPad but the automated voice just kills it for her.

Also look on ebay.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMAZON-KINDLE-FIRE-HD-7-8GB-Model-P48WVB4-FUNCTIONS-PERFECTLY-NO-ISSUES-/291306227247?pt=US_Tablets&hash=item43d334462f  Be really careful to check the models obviously.  That's how I got ds' kindle, on ebay.  His is a kindle hdx, but I don't actually recall why I went that way.  Amazon probably has a chart to show you the differences.  I found a deal so I bought it.

Honestly, I have no idea if there are better sales on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.  Good question.  They ARE discounted right now.  We bought our Kindle Fire for DS last Christmas and there was a really great sale but I don't know if it was better than the sale during Thanksgiving since we weren't looking back then.

DS tolerates text to speech when he has to but he much prefers audio cd's or Immersion Reading with the audible books.  Right now there is a sale on Audible books but I don't know if you can still get Immersion reading if you buy the audio book first.  We usually do it the other way so we can get the discount on the audio book that comes with buying the Kindle version.

Onestep, as long as you have both files (audio and ebook) on your kindle, the immersion reading will work, assuming the book is whispersync ready.  It even works if you get one (or both!) of the files through the library.

Oh, I know that it will work as long as both are on the Kindle.  But I wasn't clear if you retroactively got a discount on the audio book if you bought it BEFORE buying the e-book.  We do use the library but it has a REALLY limited selection of audio books.  When we purchase I always buy the e-book first since you get a discount on the audio book if you already own the e-book.

I found out the hard way not to use my Audible credit to buy the Audible book and then go to Amazon for the corresponding Kindle book for Whyspersync.

Audible customer service explained that the only way to get the cheaper Kindle book was to refund my Audible book, then buy the kindle book, and then buy the Audible book.

Thanks for the info, Timberly.  I suspected this was the case but I am glad to get confirmation.

I do this all the time and it works just fine. Is that because I have the HDX or something? I often use my credits to buy the audiobook and then there is a little button to buy the corresponding text for a couple of dollars and I just click yes. Why does it work for me and not others?

You were using your credit.  I can do that, too.  But if I am purchasing the book and the audio, I need to purchase the book first or the audio is full price.  If I purchase the book first, then I get the audio at a reduced rate.

Ok, I get it. I have my Audible subscription cranked up so high I virtually never run out of credits.

Cost wise there's lots of times it's cheaper not to use your credits - whenever the price is significantly below your cost per credit  - the discount if you've bought the Kindle book is just one example.     I don't blow through my credits very fast because of that actually - and so far Audible has managed to have some kind of 'deal' just when my credits were piling up enough that I was considering canceling - and got me to spend them a bunch of them and stay subscribed lol!

I think you can find a lot if you watch all their sales and daily deals, etc. The problem for me (which is why they do it) is that of course I buy more than I would usually since I'm looking at their site every day.

I find the text to voice almost intolerable. My son seems to be able to handle it okay, but clearly likes the real audios much better. For us it has been worth it to have the real audio.

He has come so far with vision therapy that he is able to read so much more than he used to, but it is tiring. Right now he's reading the hard copy of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn while he listens to the audio, which is working well.
