fairfarmhand
I have a 17 yo dd. i need some gift ideas for her. I'm trying to stay away from electronic gadgets since she has zero sense of moderation when it comes to such thing and they turn into a source of conflict. (I've already gotten the "How can you not allow her to self-moderate! She will need that skill in college" lecture from many people on this board. Suffice it to say, that it's not worth the upheaval that such things cause in my home. We've tried lots of different things, but the moderation skill is just not there, and I'm unwilling to allow my dd to spend 8 hours a day tinkering with electronic gadgets and screaming at me if I try to mention that it's excessive) SO..... Any ideas other than electronics for a teen. I've got a birthday coming up and Christmas for her. I'm getting her some art supplies, and some piano music from the Hobbit. Other thoughts? I talk to the trees
Does she knit or crochet? Supplies for that (luxury yarn, nice needles) would be fun. Scrapbook/papercrafting supplies, perhaps? A subscription to Games magazine?

fairfarmhand
She likes to tinker with electronics? Maybe she would like a computer programming camp or a set of tools? How about a trip to a MakerFaire or an Engadget show? You do realize tech companies are looking to diversify and welcome gals that have training in and an aptitude for tinkering? I would also suggest sports equipment and lessons...raquetball, tennis, etc or an upgrade to existing equipment plus apparel useful for it. It's more like she would spend hours emailing, texting, watching funny youTube videos, etc. on an Ipod or similar device. (If it were programming or that sort of thing, it wouldn't bother me nearly as much)

mom2jjka
My daughter sounds very similar. But, some other things she has asked for this year are: hair chalk, manicure supplies (especially stickers, gems and nail-polish pens,) Old Navy gift cards, drawing supplies (markers & gel-pens,) and believe it or not...Legos (especially the Hobbit sets,)
heartosunshine
I bought dd a large bean bag for her room for Christmas. She's wanted one for ages now. Other big hits in the past: books, TOMS shoes or boots, theater tickets, and nice jewelry. Last Christmas, my MIL gave her an heirloom necklace that belonged to my dd's great grandmother. That was a huge hit. I have a pair of diamond earrings from my older sister (passed away a few years ago) that I'm saving for her 18th birthday. gardenmom5
does she like pride and prejudice? I got my dd austenland: a novel by Shannon hale. (several reviews said the book was much better than the movie. I found some of the excerpts of the movie available so raunchy I bought the book instead.) lost in austen DVD necklace making supplies? ondreeuh
Magazine subscription(s) Books Wrist warmers/fingerless gloves Tickets to an event (concert, ballet, play, etc...) :) My 19 yo dd is getting concert tickets and hand-knitted fingerless gloves. Also a scarf and a GC to a restaurant she loves. In the past few years she has loved her cocoa thermos, henna kit, flexible camera tripod, and movie tickets. Also party games she can play with friends. Oh! And she loved her disco light! http://www.amazon.com/Lightahead®-Rotating-Strobe-Crystal-changing/dp/B00AMUP9XG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417028506&sr=8-1&keywords=Party+light&pebp=1417028513726 (confession: I bought one for myself too). I like giving them "experience" presents or things truly useful more than stuff (although I love Think Geek for stocking stuffers). I'll be following this thread for more ideas. I think it was $2K. we told her she'd just have to get a job and buy it herself. Of course, now she can afford that - she bought a house instead. but she did love lego. for a cell model she had to make in middle school, she used lego. for a medieval village she made in high school - she used lego. lego has even cooler sets now. . . . Jenny in Florida
My 16 year old is a guy, but he's getting: pool cue with carrying case and, if we can find one my husband approves of, a book about how to do tricks. personlized gift box with a B&N gift card. Wallet Ninja and a couple of tools specific to theatre tech. the Rick Riordan Greek myths book. the latest book in a series he reads. a paracord bracelet and key fob. a vest I'm sewing for him. personlized PJs. possibly tickets to something, if we can work out the details. We're still gathering ideas for my daughter who is turning 20 just before Christmas. Thus far, we have the following on the list: a Importance of Being Earnest-themed tote from Litographs. a personalized gift box with a B&N gift card. her own cookbook/binder with a starter set of recipes for her favorite things that I make. a skirt I'm sewing for her. personlized PJs. We're hoping there will be something cool available during the Project for Awesome when it rolls around in mid-December that we can get as her big gift, and I'm hoping I can discreetly poke around for book ideas while she's here for Thanksgiving. Cinder
I mentioned this in that other teen gift thread: Hanayama brain teaser puzzles. There are a number of different puzzles. Ds says start with 5; lower levels will probably be too easy.
6packofun
My teen dd just bought herself a nice sewing machine! Enough electronics to get her fix--ok, not quite the same, but she's having fun figuring it out--plus she gets to make geeky stuff. LOL

wendy not in HI
My 16 year old dd wants a pair of boots and a pair of jeans. She has boots and plenty of jeans, but both sound like fine gifts to me. She is tricky to buy for and I don't want to do electronics either. I may also get her a small wallet with a key ring (she mentioned wanting one earlier this fall). In the past I have done a hair gift: a fancy wand or straightener, and some nicer hairspray/shampoo than I usually buy. Luggage isn't exciting, but is a nice gift for someone this age. For my dd who enjoys art, I bought a book recommended here "Painting for the Absolute Beginner" and an art book about Monet.

GailV
Fun teas from Adagio teas http://www.adagio.com/index.html They have teas for various fandoms such as Sherlock, Dr. Who, and others; if you get the larger size it's in a nice tin. Special tea infuser to go with the above (such as a Tardis tea infuser to go with a Dr. Who tea) Older dd wants another warm hat, which will be hand knit. Move theater gift cards. Legos are still popular here, as others have pointed out. Tickets to a special performance. One year we went to a musical performance and sat in the really fancy box seats. Sandragood1
Dd just got a sewing machine as an early Chritmas gift. She needs it for 4-H so it's a bit early. She also got knitting needles and nice yarns. Joann's had their sewing machines at 40% off today and Friday, but only for in store and in stock. Otherwise she's interested in some earrings and gift cards for books. I'll have to take a look at the Hobbit Legos and see if there's anything she might like. Ds is getting a gps for the car but I don't know what else.
