Hunter
Can any one discuss with me scripture memory for future leaders? I found this article. http://www.desiringgod.org/blog/posts/ten-passages-for-pastors-to-memorize-cold The saying, "There are no atheists on a battlefield" is so naive it makes me sick, but what I do know is that on a battlefield, and in times of death, there are leaders that resort to quoting scripture because it is grounding and unifying to most of the people they are responsible for. And I do know, that when a non-believer is faced with helping a believer die, and if they know any scripture, they usually use it to comfort the one they are helping. As a teen I read biographies of prisoners of war in Vietnam who tapped out scripture in SOS on the walls and floors. Some of the men tapping were doing so to comfort others, not for their own benefit. They wracked their brains for childhood memories, wishing they had more to offer. Every scripture that one of the men remembered was a treasure to those that were comforted by scripture. It unified the group. It grounded everyone. The Bible is the greatest of the Western Great Books. Leaders need to know portions of it, whether or not they are believers. Both when I have been a believer, and when I have not, I have always seen the use of scripture memorization. So, say you were in charge of 100 young people, some believers and some not, but all that would be placed in important leadership positions in the future that would include helping people die and grieve and prepare for scary things; which scriptures would you want to equip these future leaders with?
