nature girl
When I asked my sister for gift suggestions for my homeschooled (almost) 7yo niece last night, she said she'd love something school related, especially something that would help her teach science or social studies, neither of which she thinks she's covering well. So because of the great Cricket mag sale I'm thinking of getting one or more of these three options. Ask is more science related, Appleseeds could be social studies, and Spider is neither (but I think she'd enjoy it more.) Have any of you subscribed to these? Which would you recommend? (And if you have fun suggestions for a different fun science or history-related gift (non-electronic, she's very Waldorf-y), I'm all ears!) OneStepAtATime
For other ideas have you looked at the MindWare catalog? And isn't there a version of those magazines that covers multiple subjects for that age range? Or maybe I am wrong. For my kids, who are older, we get Muse. It covers many topics in many different areas. They are all really good, though. So much depth. Far better quality children's magazine than most that are on the market today. Well, except that they get really wordy, especially with the ones for older kids, so if your child has vision issues or is dyslexic, etc. it can be difficult for them to read them on their own. The articles are so in depth, though, compared to other magazines on the market. Terrific resource.
ScoutTN
We love ASK! My 7 yo son reads it cover to cover the day it comes! Science stuff is fun! My kids both have small backpacks with lots of nature study items. Binoculars, magnifying glass, star chart, bird watching guide, compass, string, measuring tape, flashlight, sketchbook/notepad, ziploc bags etc. Nets for catching frogs, crawdads etc. are great too and inexpensive. For history, our family's best teaching toys have been the Liberty's Kids DVD set, American Girl books, playmobil historical sets and dress up clothes. desertflower
FWIW, I just ordered ASK because of the coupon code on another thread. :) I've heard good things about it. Perhaps a good intro for a first subscription? But what do I know. I love highlights. :P or high five.....whatever it's called nowadays. When I was young it was Highlights. desertflower
Here's the link to the thread: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/534454-cricket-magazine-sale/?do=findComment&comment=6039846 The coupon code is on the bottom of the thread. The first one didn't work for me. This one did DFP1041, but I don't think it's for BOGO. I think it's $19.95 for a print and digital copy of a subscription. Have fun! sbgrace
A friend wasn't happy with her first issue of AppleSeeds. At least she was disappointed in the writing quality of the articles. It has a new editor, so she's hoping it's adjustment glitches. Our Dig magazine was interesting, but it's geared older than those. Neither of us has received the ASK magazines yet, but the library ASK articles looked good to me. I haven't seen AppleSeeds or Spider to compare. matrips
I have three kids, so we get all three. They love them; and have for the past couple years. That said, they did pick the one they wanted to get based on their interests. History, science, and basic literature/fun reading.
