Poetry resources for 3rd grader?

Recommended Posts

Hi

My 3rd grader has decided she wants to write poetry.  I got Evan-Moor's "Poetry Patterns and Themes" for some guidance for me.  I have lots of poetry books around that we've been reading through.  However, finding an example of "giving poetry" or "haiku" etc is not the easiest thing: are there books that have a section on haiku, a section on couplets, etc that we can read as examples?

I can't believe no one has any ideas for you!  I also have a 3rd grader who loves poetry, but we don't have any "resources" as of yet, other than books of poetry on our shelves.  I have found great books at the library at the library... A while back someone suggested MCT's poetry books.  Maybe ask in K-8 for suggestions for specific curricula?  Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Maybe there's something here that can help? You can sort by educational level, so there's an "elementary" option.

Or maybe something here:

Actually, I think I'm going to get that Prelutsky book myself, hmm...

You might also try looking on Pinterest--I've come across some very interesting resources there.

My kids enjoy poetry, so we have been doing some informal poetry this year.  Last week we were studying Japan for history/geography, and we wrote some haikus.  I read two picture books to them (Wabi Sabi and Zen Times).  They both had examples of haiku.  Then we just tried a few on our own.  It was a great success!  Wabi Sabi is a really nice book.  The pictures are beautiful, the message is lovely, and there is a haiku on each page.

I think this is how we will continue to study/write poetry.
