DD had her birthday party yesterday

It went really well. It was cold here, so we set up everything inside, which worked OK. It's a nice group. DD got to have one of her friends there who she almost never sees (her herp mentor's DD-who is at a similar level, and, because of her parents, has a lot of knowledge about herpetology, even though it's not her passion), and all told, they were able to spend about 6 hours together.

She collected about $250 to benefit reptile/amphibian conservation (mostly from parents/grandparents), plus a few gifts, including a pretty large gift bag full of snake and lizard shed skins from her herp education group (and their animals, who were willing donors :) ), ranging from first sheds for hatchling corn and king snakes up to a shed from a 12 foot Peruvian Boa.

The snake cake ended up beautiful. What DD had requested was "a little wedding cake, with my snakes on top", and the baker did a great job. They're a homeschool family business, and their 17 yr old daughter is the one who really gets into fondant work, so she sat down with DD and talked over what DD wanted, and DD gave her pictures of her two snakes to work from and information about them, and she did a great job sculpting and painting them for the cake.

I think it was a pretty good celebration of her 10th birthday-she'll actually turn 10 the week of Thanksgiving, but because of so many people traveling or having guests, we've learned that doing her birthday party BEFORE the Thanksgiving travel season is the best bet. If we do it on a weekend close to her birthday, many of her friends can't make it, and if we do it after her birthday, we start hitting all the Christmas stuff.

She now gets several weeks where we do a lot of extra/special stuff, and not much school, and a lot of downtime because by late November, field work is pretty much over until Spring, and the college has a week for Thanksgiving, then their semester finals, then Winter break, so she's usually not in the lab much in late November/December, either.

So glad the party turned out nicely for her.

I remember 10 being a bit of a shock to me when my oldest hit that milestone. Something about the double digits just made me realize my time raising her at home was more than half over. Though with a child as accelerated as your dd that may have been on your mind for a long time :)
