"I wouldn't have guessed he was dyslexic if you hadn't mentioned it."

Recommended Posts

Those words came out of the mouth of Squirrelboy's teacher today at our first quarter conference. I'm not sure "thrilled" is a strong enough word to express how I feel about his current progress in school. Yeah, public school still makes me want to bang my head against the wall sometimes, but it's not because my kid is miserable and not learning.

It's all thanks him learning to read well with Barton at the awesome tutoring center we started sending him to in kindergarten. The also helped math click with him after just one semester of a special math program for dyslexics. I am so thankful that we found this place and had the resources to send Squirrelboy, because his story could be so different if either of those weren't true.

My hat goes off to those of you who successful remediate your special needs kids at home, but I know that with our personalities that wouldn't have been successful with my particular kid, so I'm glad there was another option that has worked so amazingly well.

:hurray:  :hurray:  :hurray:   That's GREAT!

Honestly, I should have pulled DD14 LOOOONG before we did.  She is so much happier as a homeschooler.  But DS10?  If I could find a school that could really support his challenges while also supporting his strengths, I would put him back in school.  He just really does better in a classroom.  He enjoys it.  DD, not.at.all. :)

So glad you have a school that is working for you!  There is NOTHING anywhere near us that I could put the kids in.  I was even told to sue the school system since they are not following state guidelines one iota.

Congrats! Thats very exciting to hear. Congratulations to you both.

Would you happen to know the name of the program that was used for Math?

He only used it for a short time so I don't know too many details, but I believe it's just called "math for dyslexics." It was developed by a dyslexia specialist and tutor. You can check out his website at http://www.timsmithonline.com. Some of the tutors at the center my son goes to have been trained in the program, but it's quite possible that homeschoolers could buy the materials and definitely worth inquiring.
