Laura Corin
Okay. This is a silly vent but.... I've been buying shrubs/hedging from the same company for years. They always allowed you to choose the week your plants would be lifted and sent (bare root), and if the ground was frozen or under snow, you could change the date with a few days' notice. This year (Wednesday night), at check out, they didn't allow you to choose the week, but they said 'We will confirm a delivery date for your order within two working days. This can, of course, be changed then if it is not convenient for you.'At 4pm Thursday I got an email saying that they had shipped my order! I don't think it will arrive tomorrow, so I should have this weekend to dig fifty-five holes, then I can plant everything next weekend. But I'm peeved that they just sent them out without warning. I've not been well, so I was planning on asking them to delay shipping by a week or two (something that was normal in previous years). Husband has a bad back and Hobbes has the flu, so no help there. As it is, they shipped on a Thursday by 48 hour non-weekend delivery, so I will get the plants on Monday. It will be ten days before I can even start planting. Seventeen days if I can't get it done in one weekend. I've written them a cross email. ETA: False alarm. When they said 'your order has shipped' what they meant was 'your free gift has shipped'. They are sending me some crocus bulbs. Phew! L

nevergiveup
Just to commiserate: a friend of mine had to plant hundreds of trees. Hers were just little twigs and the way she did it was to cut into the ground with her shovel, push the shovel over while the blade was still in the ground in order to make a gap, and slip her little tree's roots into that gap. Pulling the shovel out closes the gap and a couple of taps with the foot firms it in place. Wouldn't work well with larger trees, that's for sure. SparklyUnicorn
Makes me think of a song my youngest sings to me called diggy diggy hole. You can find it on youtube.
maize
Oh my, I like planting, but 55 holes?! That is too much for one person.
marbel
Whoa, you are planting 55 shrubs? I can't even imagine. Any teens in your neighborhood who could provide cheap labor? In any case, :grouphug: :grouphug: . The upside is, it's going to be lovely when done.

Laura Corin
Whoa, you are planting 55 shrubs? I can't even imagine. We have three acres, so 55 isn't that many really. We have planted about that many each year since we moved in, although I hope that this will be the last big year. Anyway - now I have a few weeks to dig holes. Truscifi
I'm glad it worked out! 55 holes in that short time and not feeling well...well, that would just suck.
