Tiramisu
I was looking for dd8's missing shirt, and decided to check a large white kitchen trash bag full of clothes in my bedroom, which I assumed was intended for Goodwill. A horrible smell came out of the bag as soon as I opened it, and I realized someone had put a wet towel in the bag. I took it out and threw it away in the garbage can outside, thinking the clothes would be okay. They weren't. The were all covered with thicky, hairy mold. I've never seen anything like it and the smell was unbearable. All of the clothes belonged to dd12 and included a couple of nice things I had just bought a couple of months ago for her birthday, but they were not salvageable. I was disgusted and sad at the same time. I aired out the house, opening the windows and pulling all the spores out with the whole house fan. I am allergic to mold and my nose is runny. Dd8 felt bad for me and sweetly told me I should take a shower. I guess I should be relieved that it's not in my bedroom anymore. I don't know how I didn't smell it before. :(

Cinder
Ick! I think things form a crust that keeps the smell in and the odors don't get out until you disturb the things and air circulates around it again.

Chris in VA
I thought you were going to say something dead was inside! (Like something a cat dragged in or a dead mouse or something!)

gaillardia
:ack2: what she said. I can relate, from damp basements to the plastic bag with wet towel from camp, etc., left sitting for just a couple of days ruins everything.

justasque
I would probably throw them in the washer on hot soak/hot wash/warm rinse/second rinse, with some good detergent. That would get the worst of it out. Some items may have remaining mildew spots that don't wash out, and they may have to be trashed, but the stuff from the top and bottom of the bin, as well as anything that's fairly mold-resistant (e.g. man-made fibers) might wash up just fine. You can wash them again a time or two, perhaps with a bit of bleach or a vinegar rinse, to make sure they are super-clean. You'd be surprised what a good vigorous hot wash will do. redsquirrel
I am so sorry! I would be so skeeved by that. I have a terrible mold allergy (I get migraines w/nausea etc) so I would just toss them ASAP.

lailasmum
Our apartment block caught fire about 12 years ago when we were living in London. It got left with the roof open to the elements for a good couple of months. The mould coming out of the walls and over everything even in the middle of winter after a couple of weeks was amazing. Some of it was flower-like it was so strange.
flyingiguana
If you wash the clothes with detergent, vinegar, and borax and they still smell, try laying them out in the sun for a few days. It can work wonders.
