Online latin class

Recommended Posts

I came to this forum asking for help finding an online AP Latin class and someone suggested Wilson Hill Academy. I am so thankful! The teacher, Joanna Hensley. is absolutely wonderful and my son is learning so much. Their software works great and we have had no problems. They have high school Latin.

My 8th grade son is taking Latin through the Harvey Center for Family Learning.  We are both really pleased with the class.

The text is Latin for the New Millennium and it is great.

ETA:  His only previous Latin exposure was Getting Started With Latin by William Linney.  This is a great book to run through if you won't be starting a class for a while.

I love The Lukeion Project.

But I would only enroll a middle schooler if they had a real passion or were ready for hard work. They cover Wheelocks in two years and it's a fast pace with a no nonsense schedule.

My kids have learned tons about how to do hard work. But there were days when those lessons were hard won.

Yes, we used Lukeion through the AP level with one, and it does get pretty time-consuming and intense as you go up.  My oldest had 10-15 hours of homework a week with their Latin 3 and 4 (AP).  Many providers do four years of Latin before AP Latin, but Lukeion does three and then AP Latin.  If you want that level of instruction, they're unparalleled.  Two-thirds of her 2013 AP Class got 5's on the AP exam.

My next one studies with Veritas Press Scholars Academy because are not on an AP track there (other AP's but not Latin).  They also use Wheelock's for Latin 1 and 2 like Lukeion, and then have 2 Latin literature classes.  We're probably going to have to go elsewhere after Latin 2 for scheduling issues though, either Wilson Hill or Classic Academic Press.

Our goal is at least three years of high school Latin and  dual enrollment Spanish in 12th grade.

Both of mine had prior Latin in 7th-8th grade using Henle Latin, which goes more slowly than Wheelock's.  Opinions differ, but I felt like slower was better in 7th and 8th, and then they started over with Wheelock's for more rigor in high school.

Memoria Press has classes using Henle and uses Helne through the AP level.

Both Wilson Hill and Classic Academic Press use Latin Alive.

Both of mine have won medals every year with the National Latin exam, and the oldest got three perfect paper awards and then a "5" on the Latin AP.

Lots of options!

Landry Academy uses Jenney's Latin for the first two years and then does the second half of Wheelock, so it's slower and more gentle than Lukeion. Trinqueta loves the class. If you can buy generic semesters a year in advance or at Christmas, this is probably the lowest cost option for a live class. The one caveat I'd have is that Jenney is a rigorous text and starts very fast. This class moves slower than Lukeion, but that's like saying that your Mustang is slower than a Porsche. T did First Form Latin last year with Memoria Press Academy and that provided an excellent foundation. If you like Henle, MP also offers excellent classes. We switched because I preferred a text more aligned with the National Latin Exam and I got a good deal on generic semesters.
