Who wants to psychoanalyze me?

For at least 25 years I have had a recurring dream. I think it is a common one and I would have it maybe once every three months.

I am back in college when I realize there is a class I am registered for but I have never attended the class nor do I know what the class is or where it meets. The rest of the dream usually involves me unsuccessfully trying to get to the registrars office to get a copy of my schedule, or to try to find the class, all while freaking out that I am not going to graduate, blah blah blah. I wake up so frustrated and anxious!

Well, last night I had this dream again. Only this time, I was able to get to the registrars office, where they very helpfully found my schedule. I then went to the professor to beg forgiveness. Turns out the class was "Knitting a Shawl" -- I love to knit! The professor explained that I was too far behind to start the same project, but I could bring in my own work-in-progress and be graded on that. In my dream I remember thinking "oh good, that will be a nice way to spend some time every day!"

All in all it was finally a non-stressful and fully resolved dream. Why now, I wonder?

I have not be any more or less stressed than usual. In fact, last night was frustrating because after a big wind storm we had no cable and no internet. I spent at least an hour on the phone with the cable people doing everything but the funky chicken and still couldn't get it to work. They can't send a repair guy until Monday so I am looking at all weekend with no cable and no internet.

Any ideas?

Well, Gustav Jung might say you were working on a problem and now you have found your answer - not necessarily related to knitting. Could be in any other area of life. Though...it all depends what you think of his dream analysis.

I have had similar dreams of running around in a large building frantically trying to find my classroom. They are not very often and I cannot remember for how long I've been having this dream. Dh has similar dreams from being in college and trying to get somewhere. Perhaps we are diligent people who are worried to be too late or not show up at all...:)

It's all because of your mother - she wasn't there for you - or she was there too much.

The shawl, I think, has something to do with returning to the womb - you're too far along (grown) to start that - so you need some other thing to make you feel warm and secure (a nice pair of fingerless mittens maybe?).

(Hands steepled under my chin) Why do you think it's been resolved now?

Idea - because you didn't actually do the funky chicken while on the phone with the cable company - that's how you should spend the weekend.

Hmm, seems like this is a common theme.  I've had a similar dream periodically - in school and can't remember what classroom I'm supposed to be in/can't remember my schedule, and frantically look for a copy so I can find out where I need to be.

It doesn't happen a lot but occasionally still.  I haven't been in school in an actual building in about 15 years.

This is an extremely common dream. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/radical-teaching/200909/recurring-final-exam-dream

I used to have these - with many variations (meant to drop the course but forgot to actually do it & now suddenly have to write the final, can't find the room of the exam, skipped class so much that I didn't know the date of the exam....)  a lot, for about 10 years after graduating from uni. I did have quite a stressful job at the time.

Then I had a recurring dream that I was driving my Honda with a manual shift, in an underground parkade & I was backing up & the car wouldn't stop. I was driving around & around, down the various ramps & of course careening towards the final concrete wall at the bottom. The brakes didn't work  no matter how much I stomped on them....

One day when I recounted the dream to my dh, he said 'Oh, easy! Just pop the shifter into neutral & pull the emergency brake." Never had the dream again.

Now if I  get any recurring dream, I tell myself in the day what would stop the situation early on. Find the solution while you're lucid & ime, the dream doesn't come back. But  possibly that's just me....

I didn't go to college.  I don't have this dream.  But the other day I was going to do a stressful photo shoot (I'm the photographer).  The entire night before I kept waking up in the middle of dreams where I couldn't remember how to get to the photo shoot site, or I was scheduled to be there at 4:30 but in my dream it was 4:27 and I was just stepping out of the shower at home, or when I got there I'd forgotten a vital piece of equipment.  All night.  Very stressful.  It's the same sort of dream as the college one, but since I didn't go to college it turned into a photo shoot dream.

I suppose people have these dreams when they know they *have* to be somewhere and if they aren't--disaster!

I think it's wonderful that you finally had a dream with a resolution.  No clue what it means.

Hmmmm interesting theories! It will also be interesting to see if I ever have this dream again!

One dream that I also have over and over, but it's a good one, is where I buy a house and realize not only is the attic HUGE but it is filled with furniture and clothing and jewelry. Just stocked full. 5-10 grandfather clocks all lined up, beautiful dressers and carved chests. The jewelry is set up like a store display. Just rooms and rooms full of wonderful stuff that I just keeping walking through and finding. In the dream I have a wonderful time picking out what I am going to keep and imagining how much money I will make selling the rest. That's a nice dream.

I used to have a dream that the house didn't just have one upper floor but (at least) dozens that for some reason I don't visit, only to find out that the rooms are filled with various kinds of good furniture, etc.  However,  some of the upper most floors had water damage because of a leaky roof that I didn't attend to!

It's always gym class for me. I just dreamed it again last night. Halfway through the year, I realize I've been signed up for the class but never attended. How will I graduate without that credit?

Another dream involves me at my first job waiting tables. All my section is full and I can't keep up. I also can't focus on the menu enough to understand what my customers are ordering or what price I have to charge. ( I analyzed this myself: it's because I'm extremely near-sighted and in the dream I don't wear glasses.)

Good to know I am not the only dreamer in a rut!

Oh gosh, I have no insight into your dream, but you've given me hope that someday I will finally catch that flight and make it to a tropical paradise instead of running from place to place in the airport, and getting on one plane only to find it's the wrong one and needing to get off again, and so forth.

I've had similar dreams--probably about once a year. I get to school but I'm going to be late because I don't have my schedule and I don't know where the registrar's office is.

I had one job that really stressed me out and during that time I regularly had dreams that an alligator was chasing me. Sometimes it was a robot alligator, other times it was an alligator that could hide behind a newspaper at the back of the bus. I finally stopped having those dreams when I moved on to another job. They're funny now but at the time not so much.

Too easy! All weekend with no cable or internet? Clearly you are supposed to knit a shawl!

This was exactly what I was thinking!

I have the same dream periodically, though I'm usually sitting in the class with a final exam about to start, and I haven't been to the class all semester and didn't even know I was registered for it. I've never had it come to a resolution, though once I did come across the book I needed in order to study so I was able to get some cramming done.

I never had it while I was IN college--it only started after college. While I was in college, I used to have two recurring dreams. In the first, I was alone in the small city where the uni was located, and I was being hunted by something terrible. I never did see what it was, but I would run and hide from place to place (basements of random homes, building rooftops, empty stairwells, etc.), trying to stay ahead of it. In the second, the dream changed each time, but the gist was always the same: I would be at some lookout point (an apartment balcony, the top of a hill...once I was at the top of the Space Needle!) and I would turn and look out into the distance and see a massive tidal wave slowly rolling in toward me. Not too hard to analyze for an overwhelmed college student

I really do wonder if your subconscious is telling you that since you're about to have an unexpected quiet weekend, you should go ahead and do something creative and relaxing.

I've had this dream before too! I always wake up feeling so unsettled. Gosh, I hate that feeling.

When I was a kid I had a recurring nightmare that a scary clown was trying to break in through my window. Talk about having a hard time falling asleep! It finally ended up resolving itself when he was captured by the police. The resolution of recurring dreams is so fascinating to me!

Congratulations.  You are cured.  :)

I have this dream, only it is always high school, I can't recall my schedule, can't remember where my locker is, can't find my class, forgot my books, the office can't help, etc.  I graduated high school in 1985.  Fear of failure and inadequacy.  It just never ends!

I have two reoccurring dreams. One is where all my teeth crumble and fall out. I have had this same dream since childhood only different variations of it. Sometimes I am at the dentist other times I am home.

The other is I am in church playing the piano for the congregation and all of a sudden I forget how to play and I just start hitting keys.  Also I can't read or see the notes. Really weird. So I'm of no help.

The teeth one is common too! And the second one sounds just like another anxiety dream, like being in high school and finding you're naked or the class you've never been to.

Oh...I have the college one, too.  Only in mine I haven't gone to class all semester (because i forgot I signed up for that class) and then I'm expected to take the final exam completely unprepared.

My other reoccurring dream is that I am in a bus or a RV that is driven into deep, dark water.  The bus is starting to fill up and I know there is no way out.  I usually wake up from that one at the last minute absolutely terrified.

I have the school dream also along with the buying a house and finding extra rooms with stuff.

My other common dreams are:

1. The naked dream.  I've had this since elementary school.  I get to school and I'm naked, but no one notices.

2. I'm running from something to my car and keep dropping my keys.

3. I'm trying to beat off an attacker or someone I'm mad at, but my movements are all really slow.

4. I'm riding a bike without a seat, up a metal bridge with a steep incline in the rain.  Sometimes I have a pillow as a bike seat, and I have to balance it on the pole that usually has the seat.

ETA: I also have the teeth falling out of my mouth dream.

How interesting!  I have the college dream, too -- I am supposed to be in a class and I can't find it, I'm trying to get to the office to get a schedule or map or something.  Very interesting...

I also have a dream where I get a new house and it's HUGE, and I'm just wondering all over it, enjoying the idea of so much room.  I think this one is pretty easily interpreted. :p

Came back to add the other anxiety dream I used to have. The one about going on a trip and not packing any shirts. It was always shirts, not pants or underwear. Maybe I had a shirt thing. :P I haven't had that dream in a few years now but it used to haunt me regularly.

I have had the school dreams (high school): Late for class, didn't study for test, just realized i haven't been to class in a month,  lost in the building, can't find locker, can't remember locker combination, dressed in a flannel nightgown, missed the bus, had to walk home through New York City. They don't happen much any more.

I do have recurring house dreams with leaky roofs, extra rooms that I didn't know I had,  houses with many stories that are leaning precariously, indoor swimming pools with creatures in them, wierd neighborhood settings, etc. I like the ones with surprise rooms, because I spend the rest of the time trying to figure out how to decorate them with stuff I find in the rest of the house, usually mismatched antiques.
