OneStepAtATime
I need to be able to explain pH, Acids and Bases in a limited amount of time to my DS10. We created indicator last night but I need words to explain the other as we work. He is going to co-op today where they will talk about it further but he wants an explanation before he goes so he will better understand what they are doing. I am no scientist, nor have I ever played one on TV. Any quicky explanations?

Lori D.
Last year when I was pulling together info for my gr. 1-3 and gr. 4-6 classes on ph, acid, and base, I found these websites helpful: - Ducksters: Chemistry for Kids: Acids and Bases (1 page, with illustrations, great for kids) - Chem4Kids: Acids and Bases (for older students and parents; page 1 = simple explanation of where acids and bases come from; page 2 = definitions; pH scale) - Science Buddies: Acids, Bases and the pH scale (another 1 page explanation, for older students and parents) Enjoy your chemistry co-op! Warmest regards, Lori D.

Warmest regards, Lori D. Thank you so much for this. We ended up having to miss co-op this morning which stressed DS10 out even more. I promised him that we would do some experiments and walk through what the teacher was going to cover so he wouldn't get behind or feel left out. :)

In case it helps YOU put together a quickie unit at home, this Wiki How: How to Explain Acids and Bases to Children has explanation, but also some hands-on. :) These 2 homeschool blogs have some more ideas: Confessions of a Homeschooling Mom Parent Magazine: The Homeschool Den Enjoy! :) Warmest regards, Lori D. Thank you. I love the Hive. I have a raging allergy related headache. This is helping DS and I both. :)
