Guest Nicole826
I'm looking for a way to break up the chapters into smaller bites for my two students. The chapters in this Volume seem to be longer and more complicated than the previous Volumes. Has anyone else experienced this and had trouble teaching it? Did you come up with an easier way to break it down? Help or tips much appreciated. Thank you.
HS Mom in NC
What do you mean? Do you mean narrations? The Activity Book has questions for narrations and many are "directed" narrations that only focus on one aspect of the more complicated chapters. Chris in VA
The books do, indeed, increase in difficulty. That's because they are designed for different ages. ITA with OKBud--use the curriculum in the way that works for you! One super simple thing I did (sort of a "well, duh!" thing...) was to wait to do the mapwork until the whole chapter was read. I did a narration that I clean up and used as copywork the first day, and if we finished the second day, we did the mapwork then. The next time, we reviewed a bit if I felt things hadn't stuck pretty well, and tried a project or two. Some weeks, we didn't do much of anything, and we also skipped a few chapters some years. Make it work for you!
mamaraby
I'm using History Odyssey with it so we're not going in the same order as the book, but even if we weren't we'd still follow the same general guideline of one section a day - two per week - unless the chapter is really short. We do a narration after each section and if there's map work then we do that after the second section. Narrations are definitely more challenging for some of the sections so I can see where you might even want to break up a section. We haven't done that yet, but I kind of wish I had in a few spots. HS Mom in NC
We usually cover 2, sometimes 3 sections per week and usually spend two days on the section. Sometimes we just spend one day when there are 3 sections to read. We school 4 days a week as the 5th day has a PE class and social gathering. We don't do history on that day. Two Day Routine for 1 section of SOTW: First Day Read aloud SOTW section, do a narration and copywork in the morning. Read aloud related recommended reading (picture books, chapter book, non-fiction book) listed in the SOTW Activity Book in the afternoon. Second Day Read aloud longer recommended reading (picture books, chapter book, non-fiction book) from the SOTW Activity Book in the morning and another in the afternoon while the child does a coloring page(s.)Do mapwork.Do related hands on activity from the SOTW Activity Book. (Or from the Discovering Great Artists book which I've integrated into our SOTW studies.) One Day Routine for 1 section of SOTW: Read aloud SOTW section, do a narration and copywork. Read aloud a short related recommended reading (picture book, chapter book, non-fiction book) listed in the SOTW Activity Book. Do mapwork. Do a short hands on activity if there's time.
