I love garment sewing & I'm on a roll right now LOL.  I just finished the Lady Skater dress for myself & next on my list is the Leanne Marshall coat for Simplicity. I even made a digital rendition of that one; I'm so excited. I'll have to do a muslin for that, so in the meantime I might make a striped Renfrew--which is a quick sew & is available as a PDF.

I'm making pillowcases to give for Christmas gifts to my great nieces & great nephews. I may also make pajama pants for them if I have time. We're thinking small this year because of a need to pack light as we are taking a family trip together. I know I can't haul a lot of stuff with us and I can't imagine their parents being able to haul a lot of stuff home, either.

I'm using the pillowcase instructions on allpeoplequilt.com and adding some piping between the sleeve and the body of the pillowcase.

I let slip that I can sew when my son got involved in children's theater. (It's fun, though. I only jokingly complain.)

I just finished several pairs of ruffled girl pirate pants for Peter Pan, am finishing the jagged legs of a boys' pair, made a pair of lop ears for Hop the bunny, and I'm in the middle of a skunk vest. There's fur everywhere!

I don't suppose that's helpful in giving you ideas, though. :P

I'm going to make a couple of these bags. This is the extent of my sewing abilities. :p

Oooo, I like those bags.  Much nicer than the more utilitarian ones I made for my kids to store playclothes and puppets in...

Those ones are actually nice enough to give away (provided I can do a decent job...)  I have very basic sewing abilities, and a very basic 1960's Kenmore.

Thanks for the link. :)

Here are a couple I've already made--one according to the pattern (upper left) and one a bit longer but same width (center). The other bag (upper right) was made with this pattern which goes faster but the top doesn't close well. The ribbon in the picture didn't work at all for a closure and I replaced it with parachute cord which works better but the bag still doesn't close completely.

ETA: Blerg--I can't figure out how to post it here.

ETA2: here we go

I think I watch too much Project Runway.  After looking through dozens of costume catalogs, I decided that I wanted to make my daughter's duet costume this year.  The other mom got really excited about that idea.  I'm going to be making halter bustiers out of pleather and then skirts out of a soft lace.  Should be striking if I can pull it off, but I've never worked with faux leather before.  I hope it behaves!

I cut out a new tunic at Keptwoman's house about 3 years ago and need to sew it up this weekend so I can wear it to the SCA picnic in a fortnight because *I have nothing to wearrrrrrrrrr* (Except stuff I hate.) Naturally that makes me feel like doing anything but, because I'm sure it isn't going to fit, my sewing machine isn't going to work etc. That will be followed up with a new tunic for dd because she really doesn't have anything to wear because she's grown!

I'm intending an outfit like this but without the fur coat: http://www.strangelove.net/~kieser/Russia/PartizanWoman.html

The Russians do the best hats in history. That had is so nice and shiny it won't matter that I look rubbish in hats.

what fabric for the coat? is it difficult to use thicker fabric with the sewing machine?

I'm finishing this clutch. I added a wristlet bc my niece said that was missing on the last batch of clutches. However it took my a while to find the right size clasp/Dring so now I've put it off.

I had pinned the pattern for this onto the fabric months ago but sadly I'm scared to cut the slippery polyester material for this one.

It's a flannel wool coating from Mood. I just have a really basic, entry level machine but I've sewn through a lot of thick fabrics (leather, really stiff interfacing, denim, etc) and this is medium weight, so I don't anticipate any problems (famous last words!).

I had a 6 hour car ride last weekend and listened to creative podcasts mostly about sewing.

Modern sewciety,

Elise Gets Crafty

Abby Glassberg While she naps

After the Jump

anyone have any others that are good?

Oh! The Sewing Affair is GREAT! I think most of them are over an hour long & they are really fun to listen to. She's interviewed quite a few of the "big name" sewing bloggers. I've listened to Modern Sewciety but she has too much quilting stuff for me. I follow Elise's blog but I haven't listened to her podcast yet.

Wow- that wool is stunning!  The coat is going to be gorgeous when you're done with it.

Thanks! I sure hope it turns out! It's the most expensive fabric I've ever bought, I've never worked with wool before (but I'm a compulsive researcher) and it's a brand new pattern so there aren't any reviews of it. I sewed a coat last year (not wool) and loved the process & the finished result--I'm attaching pictures. Consider it a shameless brag.

Thanks! It's by an independent pattern designer, Sewaholic. She designs specifically for pear shapes (more pear shaped than I am, so I grade the hips down usually). It's the Minoru jacket. Here's the designer's blog post introducing the pattern for the first time.

Keeiping in mind I not longer have littles at home and am sewing for Grands, this is my list for the past three weeks.

Quilted bag for myself.

14 pairs of leggings ( 3 granddaughters) 2 of the pairs had a matching shrug

tshirt dress with applique work

3 long sleeved t shirts

cloth box with 8 matching napkings ( wedding shower gift)

5 hooded towels ( 4 custom order and one baby shower gift)

corderoy jumper and turtle neck

Most of this fabric was "gifted" to me and all of the elastic. Most of the rest of it is remants from other projects, so pretty much I am trying to empty out my fabric stash.

Every other week with I sew with a charity group that makes hats for the homeless.  Lately we have sewing 200 - 225 per week.  There are usually 5 - 8 of us.  On woman has them all cut out when we get there.  We only sew for about 3.5 hours..

I still have 3 pairs of PJ's to sew up and then I can start my christmas sewing.

I think there will be cloth boxes and napkins for some of my girls, and some of them want a cowl neck sweatshirt I have been sewing for myself for a few years.  Comfy and easy to sew up.

I'm just finishing up two matching wool jackets for my babies. I salvaged the wool from some adult clothes. I love sewing for babies because it's so easy to make things turn out cute. I think that this has been one of my favourite projects ever.

Next up is hemming some curtains. I've got 7 sets to hem and I'm going to be paid $150. I haven't done anything for pay in years! Thankfully they're thick cotton and not something nasty to work with.

After that is some jumpers for my two year old. The females in our family only wear dresses so I feel like I'm always sewing dresses. At least little dresses are cute. :)

What a cool outfit!  :coolgleamA:

I'll need the coat, though; it's starting to get chilly around here.

I "volunteered" to make costume pieces for each of my two kids. I finished a Halloween-themed skirt for my daughter last weekend and mailed it out to her on Monday. She picked the fabric (dark-ish orange with black spider webs all over it) via liberal texting of photos while I wandered my local JoAnn's store. It turned out really cute.

Tomorrow (or later today, I guess), I have to finish a Victorian-style double-breasted vest for my son so that I can deliver it to him when my husband and I drive down to see his dance concert tomorrow evening. The event for which he needs to wear the vest is Monday evening, and he needs some time over the weekend to do any fitting or tailoring that may be necessary, given that I had to sew without his current measurements.

After I finish that, I'll switch to crochet for a while. I promised my daughter I would try to create a reasonable facsimile of a scarf she liked that was too expensive to buy.

Y'all are inspirational but especially ajfries!  Will you be my neighbor?

I am also thrilled to see that several of you are supporting the new, independent pattern makers like Colette and Sewaholic.

My most recent project was an experiment with a woven plastic malt bag, something that my husband got at the homebrew store.  I immediately started to think about feed bags and the 4-H kids who raise animals but I wondered if the plastic would be a challenge for beginning sewists.  Making a tote bag, I had to deal with plastic shreds (French seams solve the problem in the big picture) but I need to experiment with melting edges for my beginners.

Prior to that I made two things for my son, the archaeologist.  He wears a high visibility vest in the field.  I made him one with pockets to accommodate his stuff.  In August I made him a long sleeve shirt, Vogue 8800 stitched up beautifully.  Colette also has a pattern for a man's shirt with many posts from an online sewalong offering support.

Coat note: Two years ago I made Vogue 8930 out of a wool knit.  I love the collar on cold, windy days.

V8930.gif

I have been trying to finish knitting a second sock of a pair that has taken too long to complete.  Then maybe I'll move on to some sewing..  Toying with the idea of making a cape but I have not committed.

Oh, and podcasts!  Be still my heart!  Thank you!

I've recently made flannel sleep pants for my too skinny for men's, too tall for boy's, son. I also have plans to make flannel pillow cases and embroidered kitchen towels for gifts. After seeing some of the projects here, I might try making the wool pea coat I've been wanting but can't find in the right size or right color.

Thank you, thank you for the suggestion. I've gotten through 3 episodes of "the sewing affair" and really love it. You're right its more sewing as opposed to quilting.

I finished all costumes last week, except crowns. This week I am planning to make my second bra - took a class over a year ago and the first one turned out wonderfully but the fit was a little off. My pattern is adjusted and I just need to give it another try now.

I'm about to start the Christmas pajama pants for everyone. I have fabric for the kids and my mother's, but I still need more for mine and dh's. Last year I only did the kids' but it was soooo easy that I realized I should do us all.

I may also make comp book covers for gifts. If I manage to get on that... I made a really cute one for ds after I bought one for his brother. His has a mustache fabric and looks really cute on his general comp book.

The costume pieces I made for my teens for Halloween were so successful that I think I've decided to re-use the patterns and make them each an item for everyday wear. For my son, it'll be a double-breasted vest in a somewhat more subdued fabric than what he chose for costume wear. For my daughter, I'm thinking a skirt she can wear to work (maybe something tweedy). I spent some time yesterday poking around her Pinterest boards for inspiration.

Each will also get the traditional Christmas eve PJs, although I haven't yet settled on ideas for themes.

Now that Halloween is over - on to holiday gift sewing. Working on American Girl doll clothes and dresses right now. I love the accomplishment of completing doll clothes - seems a little more satisfying than kids clothes. Maybe because I am willing to put in detail work on small items and not so much kid sized items.

Finished quilting a Christmas table runner my mom pieced before she passed away. Sending it off to my sister as soon as I finish sewing the binding.

Machine quilting a lap quilt for myself- all 30's fabric.

Will cut a Spiderman quilt for my grandson later this week.

Then on to some holiday quilted placemats and a birthday gift for a dear friend.
