My son's school is doing something really good...

Recommended Posts

Squirrelboy is dyslexic, but thanks to many years of tutoring, he is reading on grade level and loves to read. However, he still needs more reading support than the average kid and struggles with writing.

I'm not sure how it happened, but he was tapped to participate in a special pull out group at school for ON LEVEL readers. The idea is to take readers that are just barely on level and give them a boost to get them reading above level by the end of the year. They are also helping each kid with individual issues. Squirrelboy is working on writing about what he reads.

I think this is awesome. Kids who are just barely on level usually just have to make due to whole group instruction. That's not horrible, but some of those kids are at high risk of falling behind, and this kind of group is set up to catch those kids before that happens.

They're pulled out four days a week during one of the "daily five" segments, which are language arts related, so they're not really missing anything.

Tonight was Fall Festival at school, and I happened to meet the teacher for Squirrelboy's group and got some more details about it. The program they're using as their base for reading and discussion is Junior Great Books, which I've heard good things about. That makes me happy. The group is first thing in the morning. The other day they read a story that featured a soldier eating cheese pancakes. Apparently all the kids said, "What are those?" so the teacher made some and brought them in this morning. I like this teacher already.
