StaceyinLA
How would you set this up and work it out? Emily has nickels, dimes and quarters in her piggy bank. She has twice as many dimes as nickels and 12 fewer quarters than dimes. The total of the coins is 9.00. How many of each type of coin does she have? I am not getting the correct answer when I fill in my problem so I'm doing something wrong.
myfunnybunch
I set it up like this: n is the # of nickels, d is the # of dimes, q is the # of quarters. We need to multiply the # of each coin by its value because we only have the sum of the value of the coin, not the number of coins, so: 0.05n + 0.10d + 0.25q = 9.00 d = 2n q = d-12 = 2n-12 0.05n + 0.10(2n) + 0.25 (2n-12) = 9.00 0.05n + 0.20n + 0.25n-3.00 = 9.00 0.75n - 3.00 = 9.00 0.75n = 12.00 0.75 0.75 n=16, d=2n=32, q=d-12=20 16 nickels = 0.80 32 dimes = 3.20 20 quarters= 5.00 9.00 :)
happypamama
I would set it up the same way as myfunnybunch.
MyThreeSons
I would do it pretty much the same, but I would use whole numbers rather than decimals, simply because I prefer it that way. So my numbers would represent cents, rather than dollars: 5n + 10d + 25q = 900 and so on. I get rid of decimals, negatives and fractions whenever I can. Of course, I perform the appropriate mathematical operations to transform them -- I don't just "get rid of them".
kiana
I agree with MyThreeSons. I would convert the whole problem into cents and work it that way.

Haiku
I wod use a bar model to visualize how to set up the equation.
gingersmom
I would watch the video that shows me how to solve the problem.
StaceyinLA
Thanks y'all! I should've said thank you last night, but it was late and we were so stinking frustrated with it.
