mamamindy
My girls are 15mos apart. We've done a little of both. I still can't say I'm 100% satisfied doing either (combining or separating), so maybe someone can push me in one direction or the other with their experiences long term. My oldest is quite advanced in LA (IMO, but she's my oldest, so I don't really have anyone to compare to) and DD2 is bright, but still a wiggly, silly 7yo. :) We have FLL2 and ELTL2. I like them both. I'm not sure what we'll use for Level 3. Combining has helped save time....sometimes I feel like they might like to do SOMETHING separate though. And often DD1 has to wait while DD2 is being silly, being redirected, etc.
chelsmm
My kids are 21 months apart, and I do combine for grammar. But I don't do much for grammar! We do The Sentance Family every now and then, but other than that, we don't do a whole lot with it. I also combine for science and history. Coco_Clark
I have my kids, also just over a year apart, currently combined in ELTL1. My 6yr old does the full copywork, and my 5 yr old doesn't always, that's the only difference. I plan on continuing them as combined through ELTL2 and then 3, at which point we may jump ship to W&R. I don't think its necessarily ideal but my 5 yo WANTS to listen in on the readings portion, and I'm not sure he'd want to hear them all again next year. If there was a year gap it would make sense, but back to back years? It also allows us to pick our own read alouds occasionally, where if I was doing 2 ELTL reading schedules I don't think I'd have time for much more. But they work really well together and have very near the same writing ability. And while they do many subjects together, they have separate phonics and math, so they do get some one-on-one time. Incognito
We combine for grammar. I aim at the older child and let the younger child get by with just catching things. It keeps my older child engaged and the younger is still learning. HTH
purduemeche
We use Rod and Staff for grammar and have decided to keep the boys separate for the book work (speed of one is significantly faster), but keep them together for dictation. FO4UR
I like to combine for grammar. It cycles around to much of the same stuff every year. I do separate when it comes to grammar applied to writing.
mamamindy
Thank you for the suggestions. I've decided to keep them together. For now. :) Our "grammar" consists of reading literature, copy work from the literature, and then covering basic parts of speech. Sometimes I'll have younger DD point out easier parts of speech in our copy work, especially if I can see her face glaze over. ;) I'd like to stick with ELTL for the next level. If YDD isn't ready, I may have her work in the 1st level with DS? And beef it up for her?
