Oct 19-26 Accountability Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling so much better this week, so I'm hoping for a great week.

Critterfixer- We made acorn fairies yesterday and I thought of you :)

I had some time and re-organized all our school supplies so I'm feeling much better organized, which is always a help to me. Plan 552 on Math for ds is ..... I looked at this and I looked at that and I *think* we are going to be trying out a worktext from Math Mammoth, I had planned on using some of her topic books but when I looked at the prices it was just as cheap for me to try out the full curriculum for what I was wanting. So, we're going to check it out for teaching some concepts and practicing with other sources. He looked at and loves the Math Pizzazz sheets, so those will be primary practice sheets. I'm so pleased with these as they give us an interesting way to keep up our practice. I also went ahead and ordered the Fraction and Time Travel Math book to hit those topics in another way, along with Jacob's MHE. Did I mention he thrives on variety? So, my plan is to have a math thread for new skills, one for practice and then hitting conceptual. I'm trying not to think about the fact that I really didn't care for Horizons 4 and how that might play out for dd who is using and enjoying Horizons 2.

I'm still undecided on grammar for ds, I feel like it would be nice to add more in as we've just been doing Practice Town but I'm still trying to decide on the what. We're swimming along with history, undecided about science, we'll probably just go through the library books I have this week and keep with nature study and interest led until our next session.

I feel like we have been slackers this past week, but in reality we haven't. We had two field trips that just happened to be last week. On each day we did some academics though (got the math in!). And the field trips were good too. I was sick last week (and still am) so I'm not as motivated as I might otherwise be (sinus ick). Week before dd was sick. I'm planning to push through this week, although we have family coming to visit and another (short) field trip. I think we are going to skip ballet tomorrow to give us a little breathing room. Otherwise, things are going pretty well.

Better you than me. I'd have turned into the mother with the glass eye and wooden tail over that project.

No school today. We had our family First Chili, that time of year where the matriarch declares it cold enough to make a pot of chili and we all celebrate by making our own particular favorite kinds, along with other seasonal fall treats (pecan pie, caramel for apples, that sort of thing). So that is an official school holiday.

We had a little down time this week due to illness, but still managed to get a full week in. This week I've a mind to head up North state to see the colors and to tour an art museum, so I'm trying to inject a little culture into our lives. Other than that, keep hitting the skills, full steam ahead. Our grammar hit this week was parsing Washington Irving. I think we may parse some Poe this week for fun.

I'm debating whether to make the Latin cumulative test open notebook, to act as more of a review than a test. With the good scores on the Unit test last week, I am ready to move ahead into nouns and declensions, and I think the boys would be better served with a review rather than another test. Love being able to make those decisions on my own!

soror, your math sounds like ours often feels.  We're doing -- very unusually for us -- just one brand at the moment, but 3 topics.  Thank you for opening this thread!

Critterfixer, I'm enchanted with your October grammar parsing.  Was Irving from Sleepy Hollow?  what Poe are you using?

I think I last posted on this thread 3 or so weeks ago, with a goal of figuring out what we're doing with A.  I'm pretty much there!!! whoo-hoo!  I have a couple of iffy areas -- not sure if we're incorporating philosophy a la Angelicum/Great Books, would like to finish MCT's Music of the Hemispheres this calendar year and also some vocab from them and this is not incorporated -- but I think all the pies are in the oven with those exceptions.  They're more like crust decorations for us than pies, though.

My child-education goals for this week:

1.  Stay engaged with everything we are doing.  Writing, math, history, science, CA history, grammar, handwriting, typing, spelling, poetry memorization, harmony fine arts, poetry reading, Shakespeare, Bible, AO geography and biography for A.

2.  Write down what we are doing.

2a. draft a flexible schedule for it, with daily stuff and weekly stuff.

3. Stay engaged with the three Rs for N, at least 2 Rs each school day.

4.  Do studio art this week.

not quite goals, more like serious wishes:

5. Get stuff for Halloween costumes by this time next week.

6.  Halloween reading -- make list and acquire.

Irving was from Sleepy Hollow. We determined that Irving had a thing for prepositional phrases from the parsing exercise, so I suggested that we rewrite the two sentences we did (our sample) using NO prepositional phrases. That was so much tougher than it sounded!

I don't know which Poe story we will use. I may use The Masque of Red Death. It doesn't take long to do a parsing exercise on the board, and the discussions have been good so far.

Oh man, my main goal for this week so far is to get the kids out of bed for an 8 am dentist appointment.  What was I thinking???  We were away for the weekend and didn't get back till 10 last night.  They are *not* going to be happy campers when I go wake them up.  And of course, there's no milk in the house, or eggs or bread or anything easy for breakfast.  Hmm.   Maybe we go get our teeth cleaned then go out for breakfast?

I'm not thinking this is going to be our most productive schoolday ever . . . .

I'm hoping this weeks goes so much better than last week.  DD got her 12 hours of sleep in today, but I didn't get any with all the stress in the house and with grandson refusing to sleep and whining all night.  So, I'm thinking after school/gym I'm going to drop them both off at daycare and come back home for a nap.  Yeah....that sounds like a great plan....

I'm also starting off a bit behind feeling.  I didn't do anything to finalize prep for this week and to locate the stuff we need to finish up from last week. Lots of stress this weekend with GS's parents, but it went better than expected and now I have a huge monkey off my back.  Hopefully that will help on the school front too.

Goals for DD this week:

1.  Get some allergy meds and get consistent with them.  Same with sleep.

2.  Get it done school wise.

3.  Go to the local museum sometime this week.  She's been wanting to go, and it might earn some school capital.

4.  Transition to new spelling program.

Goals for me:

1. De-stress and enjoy the kids.

Wellllll, it's a Monday. After a family holiday, no less. The boys were happy to start declensions, so good call there, or the day would have been a morass of complaints. Did have to take a complaining bead each today, which I haven't had to do in a while, and I was subject to intermittent brain spasms such as "I think 3 time five is 18. No? 12 then?" and "I have no idea what a verb is" all calculated to turn my hair gray in less than two seconds. But we persevered, and got through Latin, Math, Spelling and Grammar this morning.

Tea will be special today, with a new funny poem (How to Tell the Wild Animals-by Carolyn Wells), more of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and pumpkin cream cheese cupcakes. Both boys started new stories featuring their stuffed animals, so I will probably be lenient and only insist upon a little bit of sentence restructuring and parsing, and stay away from the dictionary today, and just do creative writing for about an hour or so. Then I believe I will take on more plant anatomy today, and I think we move on to the Indus Valley and the ghost town of Mohenjo-Daro today.

ETA: Or I might decide to introduce Fungi today. What could be creepier than plants that eat the dead or prey on the living!

Not plants...you know what I mean!

Critterfixer, you like to act like a curmudgeon but your creativity comes through, you just can't help it. Those like me that aren't so naturally inclined have to think much more about such things.

Running late here, we had a late night as well out selling popcorn and candles for scouts and recovering from a camping weekend. Its all good we just shifted the schedule. Ds did a practice sheet in Pizazz Math, which took FOREVER, but whatever. Then I introduced logic with BA and we played some Rush Hour as practice to finish it up, dd loved playing this one as well and joined in on the mini Sudoko puzzles in BA. She did her math without complaint and volunteered for reading practice.

Next ds did LA while dd played more Rush Hour, ds did spelling and passed to the next section, YA! We finished our story with TC which was a bit weak but ok. Next was some parsing, using his current book(Artemis Fowl). Now, we're up for lunch break, and I believe the girls picked a show about sharks to watch.

After that we've got phonics/spelling for dd and read-alouds for everyone. We've not managed a walk yet as the baby slept in so maybe/hopefully we'll find some time in there somewhere. I thought we had someone coming today for robotics but it looks like there not so we'll have some extra time to work, thank goodness.

Good goals, hopefully it will help get things turned in the right direction for you guys.

8am, that's brutal and I like getting up early, but getting the kids around is another story.

Well, my boys are still in bed so my day hasn't technically started yet. I'm hoping for no meltdowns today, we had one of epic proportions on Friday because his older brother got to go first doing the memory work.

Good luck!

Well, the boys have been ok, although the reviews in Primary math reduced the older one to tears. We did make it through. The younger has had a productive day. I had the meltdown this morning, it wa silly, but I really just want to go to the bathroom ALONE! I'm so tired of going with an audience.

I think that is a totally reasonable request :)

Well, it could have been a lot worse! After a dentist appt, a grocery trip, and breakfast out, we actually got some work done - Morgan made it through all her essentials, and Shannon did math, spanish, lit, and wrote an essay.  An actual essay!  With a thesis and supporting points and everything.  It still needs some polishing, but I'm happy she pulled it off.  She's got a funny mental block about writing essays - she seems to see it as something new and hard that she can't quite figure out how to sit down and  just . . . do.  Hopefully this helps get her over the hump!

Tonight, we all need to catch up on our sleep.  Tomorrow should be a solid day.

We are off to the art museum today catch some culture. I hope we come back with our artistic sensibilities sneezing and coughing and breaking out in a rash of pastels, paint and watercolors.

Had a bit of an epiphany this morning when my boys were showing off "those rocks we got at the rock show." That was in second grade as part of earth science. They whined, moaned and groaned about how "NOT fun" that trip was. Yet they still remember it, and have used things we got there as part of play, and as treasures. Hopefully that will keep me grounded and smiling when they huff around and wonder when we are going home today, right?

Well....I may have to strongly reconsider that DD is a night owl.  We finished school from 7:30 - 8:30 last night.  Easiest school time ever.....then she went an played with the baby for 30 minutes and went to bed with absolutely NO FUSS around 9 pm.  She slept until 8:30 am.  I slept like crap, again.  Baby was up til midnight refusing to go to sleep.  We finally just gave up and decided he'd have to cry it out.  He whined off an on ALL night.  Guess which light sleeper woke up every time?  Yeah...the tired mom.

We are going to the natural history museum this morning and I'll try doing school later in the afternoon/evening.

The kids did a good job on schoolwork with our babysitter yesterday. I'm home this morning. I've read them our chapter in Sassafras Science and had them do their page in the Scidat book. Right now, three of them are working on math and 7yods is reading to our youngest.

Going good today, math ran long because we were having fun. Ds did 2 pages of BA 1 division and 1 logic, along with Pizazz for practice. Dd did her Horizons lesson and both finished their time with Rush Hour. Dd is really surprising me as of late jumping in to answer questions for ds and she is really taking to Rush Hour, doing just as well as ds.

Ds did WR Narrative 3 today for writing to mix things up and both finished up the basics in the rest of LA. I read aloud to both of them from the the book Sugar Changed the world and ds read on his own as well. Lastly we read about a tree climbing botanist in SiF book (which tied in nicely because they studied Forestry in Cub Scouts last night). To finish the day ds is looking up about how the current drought is affecting the Sequoia trees as we've been hearing so much about that on the news.

Stefanie- I feel your pain neither I or the baby slept well last night either, sigh. Sure doesn't make for the most productive day. Currently the baby is asleep on me and I have to clean house and get ready to leave in about 40 minutes, oh and get supper in the crockpot. I'm feeling sick myself :(

Fortunately DH was off today so I got to take a nap amongst the sounds of DD6 destroying the house on dad's watch.  Par for the course.....but we just did our hour of language arts (started 3:30 pm) and it went great.  Minimal resistance and she could focus and concentrate.  Will finish up math and spelling after soccer practice....

If we keep this up over the next few week I'll see about adding back in science and history.  Maybe do just them on Wed and bump everything else to just 4 days a week.

Monday was a field trip. Not the most educational (guide wasn't into it) but it was fun. Yesterday we did the basics but skipped morning basket bc I was running behind bc I decided to do some housework. I realized late last night that I never got around to phonics with one dd.

We had to be out late last night but for some reason no one got the memo to sleep late. So I am tired & cranky. Baby is fussy & won't sleep bc big sisters won't stay away from me long enough for her to get in a deep sleep. We did morning basket. Hopefully the baby will take a nap soon & I can work with my big girls.

We have no bread & I have no clue what to do for lunch. I really just want to go back to sleep

We are having frozen pizza for lunch. Smart me to schedule something fun and easy for lunch today, as yesterday left us all a little bewildered and tired.

School is going reasonably well, but slow today. I think we will get through, but it might be a challenge. I may require chocolate.

One of these days I'll get around to spending one whole Sunday afternoon doing nothing but making GF fast food for lunches. Dinner tonight is probably going to be taco salad, but might end up chicken if I opt out of thawing the beef. Speaking of that, got to go to the freezer to get the beef out.

We have made it through Latin, Math, Spelling and Grammar, and a Botany experiment. Now the boys want their own greenhouse, so they can try pumpkins in it..starting large, aren't they?

Anyway, way ahead of where I thought we would be when we got started this morning. But no more weekday field trips for us. No, no. From now on, the only field trips we take are going to be to places open on Saturday or Sunday. I just don't do well with my week interrupted, they don't get back in the swing of things easily, and since we have a four and a half day week to begin with, I don't feel justified in taking a day off that might be educational but then again, might not.

Our day has been good! Big improvement over yesterday, where everyone was sent to quiet time, my older ones and myself included. Waiting on my dd to finish up today, she insists on listening to the boys' Literarure read aloud and would be disappointed if I read without her. No tears for math today, that's definitely a major victory!!

OH, I so need to pre-cook food here as well, I did that a few months last year and it worked so well.

We've not been doing any field trips lately here, we've been so busy I've put those on sabbatical until everything slows down.

We had a pretty decent day here although today dd1 and dd3 were not feeling well. Dd1 made it through school before really going downhill. We went late of math yet again (1.5 hrs!) but we were having fun, so I guess that works.

Ds is having big adhd difficulties lately, it had gotten better but I don't know what's happened.

Latin and Math out of the way today. Spelling/Grammar and Writing should take up the next hour and a half, and that's good for us. I found out that I will have to work on my Algebra some this weekend to make sure I finish Book 2 when the boys finish their second light unit. I'm trying to keep the same pace with them, but they are ripping through those things.

Good attitudes this morning and that's pleasant. Should finish out our week on a good note.

Phew, I got a phone call at 9:35 this morning from a mom saying she would be late to our little co-op group--which I had completely forgotten was meeting at my house this morning (supposedly at 9:30).Don't know how I spaced that, it was on my mind earlier this week because I knew it was my week to host and teach. Eek! I grabbed the older kids and picked up the family room in a mad rush just before another family rang the doorbell. Under the circumstances things went very well, I couldn't find one of the books I had planned to use but the rest of the class went fine. I was glad for that phone call or I would have been blinking in confusion when people showed up at my door...

Good save Maize, thank goodness for the call.

Funny day here, dd got up feeling better and we went through nearly all her seatwork(all except some practice problems) before anyone got up. Ds got up late and we had a meeting today so we made it through math, spelling, writing and history before we ran out of time. I planned on a regular day tomorrow (although I only have 4 days planned) since we're doing the co-op field trip but I just found out dh will be home so instead we'll be enjoying family time and catching up on some stuff around here.

I've slacked.  Yesterday was DD's co-op day.  She did Spanish and Art.  But today, man, just exhausted.  Baby keeping us up (teething) and we desperately need a new mattress.  We did the much needed mattress and grocery shopping today, then both baby and DD went to drop off babysitting for the afternoon while the adults took naps.  I'm still exhausted.

I had a lovely post but the internet ate it.

Anyway, I am trialing a new idea for the evenings to increase the reading time for the boys and work on their skills with longer, more complicated vocabulary. The boys have been reading aloud to me a lot from their stories, and so tonight I had them pick a book that they like to read to me. I just sat through a non-fiction on the evolutionary tree of cats, and the first chapter of a Bunnicula book. I am now officially ready for bed. Somebody tuck me in.

It will be a good thing, but I've got to learn to stay awake.

Do what I have my kids do during read alouds--keep your hands occupied! Do handiwork if you have some, draw pictures of what they are reading about, polish shoes, whatever :) There is quite a bit of evidence that many people actually focus better when they are doing something with their hands.

I did pretty well for the first--took notes. But by the end of Bunnicula, I was all listened out and my notebook was covered in doodles and my eyes were crossing. They enjoyed it, so we will be doing it again.

Normally I would write while they read, but I sort of need to concentrate on their reading to help them with the large words (Proailurus came up, and unique) and I'm not crafty, not in the slightest! And I don't have any shoes that need polishing...but I love to braid. Maybe I'll braid me a big, old rug for the living room, eh?

Could be the answer to a trivia question: Why do home-school moms take up handicrafts? So they can stay awake while the kids read to them.

(I actually really like to be read to, but it is a soporific experience at the end of a long day!)

Lol!! This is precisely why I've been trying to learn to knit!

Today was ok. Basics done. House cleaned. Groceries bought. School planned for next week.

I really hope the baby sleeps better soon. It is having such a negative impact on my days. There have been other stressors too lately. We had a break week 3 weeks ago & life hasn't been the same since for various reasons.
