stonefamx7
Hi All!! I have been homeschooling DS (12) since 2nd grade, and he is now in 7th grade! We had planned to put him in a private school beginning this year, but due to some unexpected family issues, and a job change for DH, I find myself continuing homeschooling! As we had not planned to HS this year, I have done little to no research on writing curriculum! I have pretty much everything else set! I just honestly have NO IDEA where to start! We did start WWS last year, and he did pretty well with it, and we are considering finishing Level 1, and moving on to Level 2, but I would just love to find something that allows for a little more "creativity". But, maybe that isn't what we need? I just want to know that he is prepared for college writing! I feel like the foundation needs to be established this year! Any help greatly appreciated!! I have honestly read different threads on the forums until I am seeing cross-eyed, and just need to someone to smack me in the head, and say, "This is what you need to do!" I just feel such pressure getting THIS right, as I think everything really comes down to being able to write really well! I am not good at pulling together things on my own! I mean well, and always intend to do it, but it just doesn't get done! The whole "writing across the curriculum" just isn't for me! I get overwhelmed, and don't do it! I need it ALL planned for me! I don't mind teaching it, and spending that time on the material, I just can't pull it together myself! If I could do it all over again, I would pick one thing, and see it all the way to the end. (WWE or CC), but I didn't, and I can't go back! I just need to hit the "reset" button, and know that what we do from here, is what matters!! TIA!! Bocky
It sounds like WWS 2 could be a good choice for you, since your ds has done well with WWS 1. For a creative writing option, if you do want something completely different, you could look at Cover Story http://www.coverstorywriting.com/. It is a 7th grade creative writing curriculum from the One Year Adventure Novel folks. It has DVD lessons and a student workbook and journal. Your student writes content for their own magazine over the course of the year. We are two months in and my 7th grader is loving it. She tends to prefer just-get-done materials, so it is great to see her enjoying her work and getting in to it.
Haiku
Writing in English is a free, vintage book available from Google Books (or as an inexpensive reprint from Amazon). The author is William Henry Maxwell. It teaches the same types of skills that WWS does but in what my dd12 and I find to be a much more engaging style. clementine
We used Apologia JumpIn! Writing in 7th - it was the only thing that I found for that age that didn't suck the love out of writing for my dd.

HollyDay
We used Apologia JumpIn! Writing in 7th - it was the only thing that I found for that age that didn't suck the love out of writing for my dd. I agree. Apologia Jump In! Was a huge success for my (then) 7th grader. She went on to use the creative writing program by the same author.
stonefamx7
Thank you all! Is there any benefit to doing Jump In! alongside something like CAP W/E or MP Classical Composition? I would love to do the creative writing, but also something that will nurture a deeper, more meaningful writing process that is essential as he moves into high school, whether at home or public school! Thank you all again! Alicia
HollyDay
Have you looked at Analytical Grammar's Beyond the Book Report? http://www.analyticalgrammar.com/beyond-the-book-report-essay-research We used their older format for teaching essay and research papers. Both were excellent. I've not used their new one, but it might be worth a look for you
Cottonwood
I can't recommend Moving Beyond the Page Language Arts enough. It's covers the bases very well, not just writing. The writing is very rigorous and thorough. The 11-13 level is great, and the 12-14 level is *very* writing intensive, but that's what I want the kids to be exposed to. There is a ton of variety that keeps the kids engaged, too. We really love it.
